Kremy groans and sucks down his cigarette to the filter. He cannot fall in love, he cannot want, he cannot yearn. Gideon’s too damned good an employee to him, someone useful, and he’s seen the way Gideon uses people up and tosses them aside. He doesn’t want to be another sucked-clean chicken bone for Gideon to throw away. He doesn’t want to lose him, his muscle, his eagerness to please.

And if he lets Remy Garou think for even half a second that he wants Gideon for anything more—

Fuck. Kremy heads back into his room; locks the door. Locks it again. Sprawls belly-down on his bed and wriggles partway out of his slacks. He’s horrified to find he’s already dripping, just from thinking about the way Gideon’s red lips wrap around his own fingers; that the muscles in his abdomen are already tightened painfully, struggling to keep his prick locked away. With a groan and flex he frees it, and it rockets into his palm, throbbing and slick, drenched from all the juices seeping from his slit, and it’s shameful. Shameful. What is he, some desperate teen hellbent on rutting in the reeds?

The far corners of Kremy's mouth lift, and only now does it really strike Gideon just how big that smile is. How serrated—vicious teeth sprouting from both jaws, no less frightful for the wide gaps between them. It's a pretty smile the way a freshly-whetted axe is pretty, and Gideon suspects he uses it much the same.

"Well, c'mon, sit down, then, get to judgin'," Kremy says. "'Less you still got a mind to run?"

Gideon wonders, later, what might have become of him if he'd bolted. He'd have been fine, he's sure, in time. He'd scrape together enough gold to stay put for a while, maybe start a family, more likely wreck a few. Probably meet an ignoble end too soon, blackout drunk and copperless, with no one remembering his name except as a curse.

He wonders, later, if that won't still be his fate, but at least this way, he won't be doing it alone.

Gideon's arms fall down to his sides with a rattling clank of chains, and he strides toward the blanket—

"Ah, ah—boots off first," Kremy says.

And Gideon glares, but he's already committed himself to this meal. He can suffer this indignity, too.

"There's a fine fella," Kremy says, as Gideon unfastens his work boots and steps onto the blanket in crumbling socks. "I think we're gonna get along like ice cream an' pie."

"It's almost impressive," Gortash says, "all the cracks and crevices you managed to get bloody. No wonder you're in a mood."

"I'm in a mood?" he asks, sinking a little lower into the tub.

Gortash makes a noncommital sound, close-lipped. "Broodier than usual, I'd say."

The Urge scowls, or rather, finds a preexisting scowl on his face deepening. "I do not brood."

"No, dear Urge, of course not." Ugh, and now the Urge can hear the smug grin on Gortash's face; he knows exactly what it will look like if he turns around, but turning around would stop the indulgent scritching with the brush. "I suppose it's more of a sullen pout."

"I certainly don't pout." To accentuate his point, he lifts one hand out of the tub, and flicks water back at Gortash with it.

Gortash huffs, wriggling away, then gives him a light bap to the back of the head with the brush. "Oh, yes, I can tell. The height of maturity, you are. Dip down and rinse."

Gortash's tone shifts immediately from taunting to the solid, imposing voice of command that the Urge knows far too well. It's the tone he's used to bluster their way through audacious heists and schemes; for yanking the leash up short on snivelling street thugs and Patriars alike. For making them writhe and squirm. For forcing them to grovel and beg. The Urge obeys immediately, not because he's being forced to, but because that voice burns straight through him and he would do anything, anything, to keep that voice trained on him.
