In our dueling sword class, we explored the beat. Near the end we looked at ways to defeat or counter the beat. Here the team has fun using the Girata or Inquartata to void the attack after the blade beat. Instead of getting the sword in front of them, they seek to get behind their sword.

The examination is extensive, consisting of a written test; oral examination on theory and pedagogy; as well as giving and taking an individual lesson with the foil, epee, and saber; performing "random actions" with the weapons chosen by the board; and running a military-style group lesson.

Congrats to our school's founder, @thetavernknight.bsky.social for passing his examination this weekend with the 🤺 Fencing Masters Certificate Program! He is now a Provost in Arms in Italian Foil, Saber and Epee. He was one of six candidates who tested (five provosts and one instructor). 🎉🎉🎉

It's been a ride since then -- adding a classical Italian Fencing class in 2022 and going from a humble 4 fencers to 40. What started off as just an online class during the pandemic has blossomed and we love the little community that has sprung up around it.

Five years ago today we had our very first in-person rapier class at Tufts Park in Medford - July 8, 2021 at 6:30pm. That first summer was a very wet one. We swear a third of those classes got rained our or shortened by rain, regardless of the forecast.

This month our intermediate rapier fencers will be exploring how to adapt the Italian system to “unorthodox” guards an fencers — a ver broad and loose term for fencing differently than those in the school.
