On occasion the river would come up to our door -
Every cul de sac an island within an island
And we would wait for it to recede
While the herons took the street.
Years later I would find myself barefoot and drenched beneath the Coney Island pier,
The night's violet clouds a damask curtain under the influence of the night's choice of psychedelic.
Tourists in ponchos, panicking and fleeing as the wind rises.
What, you fuckers never seen a hurricane before?
Geez.
Guess I better head back, it's not like I can get any wetter.

Cardamom

When I first came to New York I shipped all my belongings to myself,
Glass bottles wrapped in socks and shirts.
A jar of cardamom came unscrewed,
And for months after
The scent lingered in my clothes and on my body.
I still had the jar fifteen years later.
I was about to throw it out and Riah said:
“No, I’ll take it.
I can do something with it.”
A few months later we moved in together
And to our new third floor walk-up
They brought the jar of cardamom.

I checked the windows, thinking maybe I could

open them from the outside and climb back in,

having once gotten back into my own house

via a dog door, but to no avail. I began to scour the balcony for materials I could fashion into a rope to rappel down, and then realized that not only would I die horribly within seconds trying that shit, Jesus, I could never even climb a rope in school: I had a fucking phone in my hand. After fumbling a few times for the correct number I was able to call the lobby, explain my situation and... nobody came. I called again in fifteen or twenty or forty minutes and got the distinct impression they thought I was joking the first time. Maybe because I had conveyed the absurdity of the situation too well in my tone, but not the urgency. But also I did not speak Russian.

One of the things I liked about that apartment and it had a lot of issues, like, it flooded regularly, and the oven vent was a dryer exhaust pipe stuffed with old rags that I had cleaned out and fitted a 4-inch exhaust fan inside was that it was about two blocks from a plant nursery that had been open for over sixty years. I would go there regularly to buy whatever plants could survive on a tool cart parked in the driveway, and then a bunch of pots lined up along the wall, and then eventually a plant stand I built from a kit I bought online. They closed down soon after, and that's when I started to get the feeling it was time for me to go, too.

I also made a personal pilgrimage. I was given a copy of "Explorabook,” a children's hands-on experimental science book in which the supplies for the experiments were bound into the text, when I was six or seven. I became obsessed with the museum it was based on, the Exploratorium, and wanted to design exhibits there someday. I went at 22, surgical drains still in my chest, and saw a cloud chamber for the first time. A cloud chamber uses isopropyl and dry ice to make cosmic rays visible to the naked eye, their trails zipping and spiraling along the film of vapor within, the type of subatomic particle identifiable by the shape of the track. Whenever I watch my own white blood cells dance on the surface of my eyes I think of the cloud chamber. I wondered if I could make one using ethanol instead of isopropyl, and then siphon it off to do shots of the universe.

Everyone else was making coffee tables, pretty much. My teachers were thrilled to be able to help with something that wasn't a coffee table. We stored our projects in a vertical rack overnight. One morning I went to get mine down, and a piece of sheet metal lodged above it came down first: the corner hit the back of my left hand and bounced back up. And at first I thought: Huh, glad I'm okay.

Then after a beat, blood started to well from the wound like a bubble fountain, and I rushed to the bathroom inside the metal shop to grab a wad of paper towels to wrap around it. I still wasn't sure if this was a walk-it-off kind of injury so I waited for my professors to finish introducing the day's class before saying something like: "Hey my hand is bleeding.

What should I do about this?"

I had ordered the dumbbells online because I didn't think I could handle carrying a hundred-pound package home from a conventional store. When they arrived, in the middle of a snowstorm, I went downstairs barefoot thinking the mail carrier would bring the package to my door. Instead, he had rung the bell and run back out to his truck and shouted for me to come and get the package because it was too heavy for him: so I went out into the icy street, afraid he'd drive away if I went up to get my shoes, and collected the two fifty-pound boxes one at a time.

Once the flax flowered -- the type of flax with fiber best for spinning has blue flowers, but it also comes in red and yellow -- I cut it then kept it coiled up for three years, intimidated by the intense processing that would follow. I finally decided to process it when Riah showed me an 18th century flax break and hackles kept upstairs at the Lefferts House and offered to let me use them. I retted the flax by soaking it in water for a few days then let it dry, and we ran it through the break and hackles. It was such a small amount of flax and such short fibers that these antiques didn't do much to it.
