This idea for a youtube thumbnail entered my head at half eight this morning and I could not rest until I made it real. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Right. So. It's a parody of youtube thumbnails. A red boarder mostly surrounds packets of silica gel (do not eat), and my face (white, male, beard) is looking all shocked and wide-eyed. Poorly laid out drop-shadow impact font reads "Day 3 of eating silica gel until I become The Raisin Man!!"

I disagree. The way we learn and develop is through friction. We *do* still teach people to do maths without calculators etc. There are many studies (eg https://arxiv.org/abs/2604.04721) showing that AI use can damage reading and comprehension. And that's before we get into the damage that can be done through "talking" to something that comes across as having thought/agency without having anything behind that (eg https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/blog/urban-survival/202507/the-emerging-problem-of-ai-psychosis)

Screenshot of a Q&A from an AI training session. On an AI and complacency note, what work is being done to ensure that "AI natives" retain their skills? There is evidence that reliance on AI can de-skill workers (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/is-ai-ruining-our-skills-early-results-are-in-and-theyre-not-good/) and I am worried that if/when AI use becomes prohibitively expensive or otherwise unusable, there will be a lot of staff who will need re-training to recover skills that five years ago were not even in question

Similar to the argument of "what if your calculator runs out of batteries". If you look at several disciplines, such arguments have been going on forever. "How will engineers be any good if they calculate beams using software, etc etc" Plenty of bridges have been built since Brunel... Writing by hand vs typewriters, personal computers. Software programming as it went from binaries to abstracted languages.....

Back on my "I am in an AI seminar" bullshit

Talking of skills and tokenisation, is this going to cover the research that has shown that reliance on AI tools can degrade these skills and abilities of its users? (eg here: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-01947-1) Will there be anything covering what might happen if a user becomes reliant on an AI tool which then becomes too expensive to use through tokenisation etc, and how that skill gap can be rebuilt?

I slept really badly last night. Like, horribly. I woke up this morning, rolled over, and this was staring back at me. In my addled state there was a moment of genuine fear.

The back of my wife's head as she lies in bed. She has bleach blonde hair with pink tips, and is wearing an eye mask. And this all sounds fine! But the thing is, it actually looks like a hellish muppet is growing out of the back of her head like that one victorian guy. The strap of the eye mask looks like an awful open mouth, and the way the hair is bunched looks like a swollen pink eyesocket with a horrible eye bulging out of it, with a jagged pupil made by her hair tie. It was fucking horrible.

Honestly heartening that people in the chat are also responding in similar ways about AI use. Fuck me these tools are sinister. Rainforest burning polygraphs.

I am sure this will be covered, but what work, if any, is being done to strip bias from these analytical AIs? For example, autistic people might find eye contact or public speaking difficult, but that does not alter the content of what they are saying. I am worried that reliance on these technologies might adversely affect disabled people in a way that is baked in.
