Important update about my Aspects of Aelda duology. As I say below, I can't begin to thank everyone for supporting me and other Atthis authors, both publicly and privately. It means a lot to me and I'll be paying it forward where I can 🦑💜

A text statement that reads:

Dear friends and fans of the Aspects of Aelda duology,

Atthis Arts has officially returned my rights to both Catalyst and Castoff, meaning the books will be out of print as of July 31, 2026.

In the spirit of full disclosure, these rights were reverted without my requesting them, due to “disappointing sales” and the need for “a publisher better positioned to market to [my] specific reader base.” There was no mention of my statement from last month.

The sad truth is that from the moment I addressed the public and private behavior of Atthis’ owners last year, next to no effort was put into promoting my books, including when Castoff released. There’s a pattern there that’s tied to where Atthis’ owners center their energy and attention. Frankly, that isn’t how a publisher should operate.

Getting my rights back from such a publisher means I can breathe again, though.

I’ll be figuring out what’s next for these books with my agent, but you can count on there being more Aelda in my future.

Thanks again to everyone for their support, here and in private, during a pretty stressful period as an author. It continues to mean a lot, and I’ll be paying it forward wherever I can.

Morning, all. Felt the need to say something given a bit of discourse in Writer Land this week.

What I’m writing here maybe should’ve been said publicly a while ago. Except publishing is all about power, and when you’re the author, you don’t feel like you have much sometimes.

There’s a publisher out there behaving in ways that, to be very Canadian, I find abhorrent. One I’m tied to because they’ve published me and still hold most of the rights to that work.

I’ve watched this publisher attack friends and colleagues, spread disinformation, goad well-meaning people and use others as shields. I’ve watched people reach out in genuine kindness and be labeled the enemy. I’ve experienced toxic behavior firsthand. I’m watching it happen again, right now.

Last year, I set boundaries and addressed my concerns privately, and you can imagine the fallout from that.

But what matters more is the idea of unaware authors being trapped by this publisher, while the same cycle repeats. There are plenty of genuinely good people spending their energy raising red flags, so I will, too.

The gods take two fundamental forms: the Active and the Passive. Independent of pantheon, or origin, or who worships them and how, the gods are either conscious beings with personalities akin to mortals (Active) or forces of nature that move in subtle waves across the ocean of existence (Passive).

Centuries of space travel and cultural intermingling has made the galactic pantheon complex and full of overlaps, where people acknowledge the gods they want and ignore the ones that don’t feel relevant (until they unexpectedly are). Much like political borders, gods have their own areas of greater influence across the galactic map, fueled by their ties to our dimension. These ties come from active worship, powerful artifacts, or simply cosmic stability bonded to their chosen domains. Unlike a political border, though, the edges of this influence can shift at will, wax and wane if that god’s ties are strengthened or weakened. The Gods of Make, for example, are an omnipresent Passive force wherever the dwarven clan-companies expand, while the Ravenous gods that once fueled draconian expansion have largely been cast aside, their influence in shambles much like the empire they once dominated.
