Without Monument protections, these area can be sold off for mining and development. While this area isn’t generally rich with high value resources (it’s mostly sand they want to use for fracking) it doesn’t mean it won’t be destroyed. Once these places are destroyed, we can never have them back
And these two large connected areas are important for wildlife like dessert turtles who need large areas for migrating to track seasonal water supplies and food.
Further, tourism to Utah’s natural beauty is a major economic driver for the state
Beyond that, it hosts thousands of historic and culturally and religiously significant sites for Native Americans that worthy of preservation
So you ever wonder how racism builds in small town communities? This is a small, weekly newspaper in a community that is 93% white. There were 7 reported car crashes fatalities for the week - and one magically got covered three times
Essentially it's right across the river from their downtown. The yellow bridge you see has wide, protected walk/bike lanes on both sides, and rails-to-trails paths on both sides of the river. So good Bike/Ped access from downtown, without forcing a huge parking lot in core of he city
There isn’t enough talk about how Pittsburgh reclaimed its river fronts for people

I get so frustrated when Kansas City refuses to save historic buildings because they are “unsalable”. Yet, other cities go to great lengths to save them. These two buildings were essentially razed, yet their historic facades remain. It’s possible if there is the will to do so
