FIN/This Queen made her transition at 79 on May 18, 1955, long enough to see SCOTUS strike down de jure school desegregation but before the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This is the statue dedicated to her in my home town of Washington, DC. Rest in peace, power and paradise, Queen.

She was a smart investor in newspapers, life insurance companies and banks. Black people were not allowed to visit the beach in FL BECAUSE YOU ALREADY KNOW WHY. Bethune + others bought a 2 mile stretch of beach and the surrounding properties and then sold them to Black families.

Bethune also helped integrate the Red Cross🔥, raised public awareness of lynching🔥, voter discrimination in federal elections🔥, had a widely-read and published column🔥and fought segregation on interstate trains and buses🔥. Oh. She also co-founded the United Negro College Fund.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Bethune's fight for advocacy in WWII led to the creation of the amazing all Black woman unit, the famed 6888 Central Postal Battalion. The 855 women of the unit were tasked with clearing a massive, months-long backlog of undelivered mail for millions of American service members deployed in Europe.

Through the NYA, Bethune = the most prominent African American in FDR's administration. Her friendship with Mrs. Roosevelt influenced government policy in the 1930s. She was also the chair of the informal Black Cabinet of senior African American officials in the Roosevelt administration.

That friendship led to her becoming the Director of the National Youth Administration’s (NYA) Division of Negro Affairs, a post she held from 1936 to 1943. As director, she led helped get thousands of Black youth trained for skilled positions especially in defense plants during WWII.

In 1935, she left the NACW + founded the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), an organization with a more explicit civil rights agenda. Bethune’s friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the reasons for the creation of the NCNW.

She made the school's library open to the public, becoming the ONLY INTEGRATED LIBRARY, and as President of the college, successfully fought for affordable, public housing to be built near the college campus. Meanwhile, she was working with black and white philanthropists to fund her efforts.

The popularity of her school led to its merging with the Methodist-run Cookman Institute for Men in Jacksonville in 1923, becoming Bethune-Cookman College where Bethune served as their first president from 1923 to 1942 and again from 1946 to 1947, one of the few women college Presidents at the time.

Through stone cold sheer hustle -- selling potato pies, ice cream, building her own furniture -- in 1904 she founded the Educational + Industrial Training School for Negro Girls w/six students. By 1918, she had a whole brick building and another one to educate boys at the school. #WhoGonCheckMeBoo

The Bethunes moved in 1899; Mary ran the mission school and began an outreach to prisoners. Albertus left the family in 1907 and relocated to South Carolina. The couple never divorced, and Albertus died in 1918 from tuberculosis. Dr. Bethune was dedicated to opening a school for girls.

She planned on becoming a missionary but realized her mission was in America, and Upon graduation in 1894, Bethune initially planned to become a Christian missionary in Africa but was either denied or chose not to go. She married Albertus Bethune in 1898 and moved to Florida.

She was the 15th of 17 children; unlike her parents and all but two of her siblings she was born free. MEANING HER PARENTS WERE BORN ENSLAVED. Her grand parents instilled in her pride, self-assurance while witnessing the near lynching of a Black man. She also learned the value of an education.

If there is ever a Mount Everest of civil rights freedom fighters, Dr. Bethune deserves to be carved into that granite for all time. Forget all the other things she did -- this BLACK WOMAN, with A DOLLAR AND FIFTY CENTS, started a WHOLE COLLEGE that exists TODAY.

My late wife was bed bound the last seven years of her life as she mightily fought multiple sclerosis and had other chronic illnesses. We were literally in the ER room of Johns Hopkins when she slumped over in her wheelchair and went into cardiac arrest.
