It’s Qimir himself, clad in a long-sleeved black tee that’s definitely unsuitable for the weather, paired with slouchy knee-length khaki cargo shorts and scuffed black vans. Even in the shadows, his piercings wink at her, shimmering in his ears.

He doesn’t care that he’s defying camp rules about contraband out in the open.

“Hey,” he drawls slowly, eyeing Osha’s red and blue bikini set, the top visible but the side-tie bottoms covered by a denim skirt that hits mid-thigh, paired with faded red Converses. “Haven’t seen you in a minute.”

Osha, frozen in place, hears her brain literally reboot and connect online again. She thinks to think of a snappy response, something carefree and breezy. Cool and mature.

“Not for lack of trying,” she replies. Fuck. That sounded a little too heartfelt. She follows it up with a desperately casual, “Hey yourself.” '

Osha’s stomach twists with anxiety, but underneath it, there’s a current of anticipation.

Was he thinking she’d come here with ulterior motives? Is that why he’d smiled at first? Then, when she’d confirmed that she wasn’t here for that, he’d shut down.

Leave, just leave, a little voice whispers.

A louder one blasts over it, telling her to ask him a follow up question. To prod, to pry.

Osha bites her lip, flushing when his eyes drop downwards. Is he looking at her lips again?
