July EQ History: 7/21/1952 Kern County EQ, M7.5 - struck 23 mi south of Bakersfield on the White Wolf fault. It was the largest SoCal quake since 1857 and felt from Reno to San Diego. 12 killed, $50M+ damage. The fault was only ~30 mi long, surprisingly short. buff.ly/fCd2rEu
#FieldPhotoFriday This desert station got a visit back in May, before the summer heat really turned up the dial. That was good timing for the field crew, it’s projected to reach 104°F there today! But when the network needs attention, even the heat doesn’t always keep them away. #ShakeAlert #CalOES
Weekly Earthquake Stats: 19 Jul 2026 - 25 Jul 2026. There were 332 events this week ranging from M -0.19 to 3.62. Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
#FieldPhotoFriday In May, our field crew braved a windy day near Furnace Creek. They repaired a deteriorated GPS connection, GPS antenna, noisy sensor, and more. The work restored clock quality from 10% to 100%, keeping the station reliable and ready for future quakes! #ShakeAlert #CalOES
This week, members of the Seismo Lab joined the NASA Exploration Science Forum to share their research on lunar exploration. Seismo Lab Director Zhongwen Zhan presented work from Caltech and JPL, while Yuri Tamama shared her research on thermal moonquakes during the poster session. buff.ly/K6qaYBP
Life aboard a research ship still involves plenty of work on theses and papers. Downtime brought movies, games, a mess-hall coffee shop, ocean-assisted table tennis, and shared sunrises and sunsets. Read more: buff.ly/VVbCAol
Weekly Earthquake Stats: 14 Jul 2026 - 18 Jul 2026. There were 447 events this week ranging from M -0.63 to 4.32. Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
The 5th year of Earthquake Fellows wraps up this week after another successful summer! Throughout the summer, Fellows conducted their own research projects related to ambient noise, seismic instrumentation, and even machine learning!
#FieldPhotoFriday With the heat upon us, we’re looking back at cooler fieldwork near Big Bear! These snowy pics are from a 2005 station visit. The crew will return soon to replace a datalogger causing daily reboots, though there sadly probably won’t be snow this time. #ShakeAlert #CalOES
On July 10, the EQ Fellows Program held their first Alumni Celebration, where students from different cohorts came to speak with the current Fellows but also celebrate program success from these last 5 years.
Last week, we hosted a #BICEPP meeting at Caltech. Margaret Vinci and Jessie Saunders guided local leaders through earthquake preparedness, early warning, operational uses for alerts, and a tour of our facilities. A great turnout and opportunity to build connections!
Weekly Earthquake Stats: 05 Jul 2026 - 11 Jul 2026. There were 400 events this week ranging from M -0.33 to 3.22. Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
This #FieldPhotoFriday we're back at Quakes Stadium from the 4th of July! A group of Seismo Lab members took equipment out, where they helped set up fireworks, tested CSN rapid deployment units, and deployed a datalogger to collect data during the live fireworks show, from within the firing area!
Weekly Earthquake Stats: 28 Jun 2026 - 04 Jul 2026. There were 350 events this week ranging from M -0.34 to 3.39. Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
Make sure to catch our live stream tonight at about 9pm! We've been out here setting up fireworks at Quakes Stadium, and getting the CSN rapid deployment units tested!
#FieldPhotoFriday This week, our field team played detective on a station whose radio connection had gone dark. After a dusty drive to our Palmdale site and a quick reconfiguration, it was back online and ready to help power earthquake early warning! #ShakeAlert #CalOES
Just like it takes only 30 people to have a 50-50 chance of a shared birthday, regions with a long history of earthquakes can have a multi-earthquake anniversary. For SoCal, it’s June 28 - 1966, 1991, and 1992.
#FieldPhotoFriday This station near Wheeler Springs recently got a visit after connection issues were traced to failing cell connectivity. Thanks to a quick fix by our field crew, it's back online and helping keep SoCal's EQ monitoring and early warning network resilient. #ShakeAlert #CalOES
Meet Jingchuan Wang, a Seismo Lab Post-Doc who works on Earthquake early warning, Distributed acoustic sensing, and Lunar seismology! One of Jingchaun's most meaningful accomplishments is having built his career in geophysics across different countries and research fields ! #SeismoLabSpotlight
#FieldPhotoFriday This week we have researchers on the high seas! Dr. Allen Husker and some @Caltech students are on the R/V Roger Revelle, operated by Scripps Institute of Oceanography! You can keep up on the expedition, which is running through the end of the month, here: buff.ly/WsipqPr
In an ongoing effort to improve public safety, @CaltechSeismo & @USGS installed a seismic test station on the @Caltech campus. This station will be a testbed to improve earthquake monitoring and #ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning. @UOHazardsLab @PNSN1
Weekly Earthquake Stats: 07 Jun 2026 - 13 Jun 2026. There were 333 events this week ranging from M 0.04 to 3.18. Check out our weekly playback map and visit www.scsn.org for detailed information. #earthquakes #seismology #SCSN #weeklystats @CaltechSeismo
@FieldPhotoFriday Sometimes field work comes with great views. Despite the Sorrento fire being close, the field crew still got out to this station to replace an unreliable cell antenna. Working out there gave them some beautiful ocean scenery to work in, and gave us a reliable connection again!
We'd like to share the exciting news that Cijin Zhou is the 2026 recipient of the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) Grant in Crystallography! This is a high honor and recognizes achievements of early career scientists. Congratulations, Cijin, on this spectacular achievement!

#FieldPhotoFriday Many of our stations, like this one near Westmorland, are throughout the state's deserts and serve a vital role collecting data in our more swarm prone areas! This station contributed heavily to the recent Brawley swarm which produced hundreds of events including multiple M4 quakes!
It's June, and the Seismo Lab and Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) are proud to celebrate and support the LGBTQIA+ scientists, engineers, staff, students, and community members who help advance our understanding of earthquakes and the Earth itself.
