Find the goblin

An organisation that works hard so #IBD patients can have more rights is Crohn's and Colitis Ireland. Last week I started running 2km every day to raise awareness about IBDs and help CCI keep supporting people like me. People living with #IBD need more care and understanding.

My recovery consisted of taking 12 tablets every day, including steroids, an immunosuppressive and vitamin supplements. Then, in October and November, I was a bit unwell again due to getting IV treatment every two weeks. Now I get this treatment every two months.

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammable bowel disease #IBD. IBDs affect at least 40 000 people in Ireland. There has been a 90% increase in cases of childhood IBD in the last ten years. IBDs are lifelong, incurable, debilitating and widely misunderstood.

An informative sheet that includes commpon symptoms of IBD such as cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, weight loss, blood in the stool, fatigue and diarrhea or constipation, and less common symptoms such as fever, joint paint and skin rashes.

By July, it was the third time I went to my GP because I was desperate. I lost 5kg, I had insufferable cramps, my feet hurt, I started to pass blood. My eyes were again very bad. The incontinence kept me stuck at home. In August I was finally diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.

The first time I submitted almost cost me an eye. All my uveitis flare-ups in the past happened due to stress, and submitting a dissertation is stressful for anybody. Thinking that I had to go through another flare-up like that one just terrified me.

Today last year I got the news that I had to resubmit my dissertation. I immediately thought about withdrawing. I fell very sick during the first submission and I was afraid it was going to happen again. Today I still find it difficult to talk about what happened. 🧵
