Here Harry is telling me that the drift towards Mahler 9 at the end is deliberate.

A bespectacled chap with a mop of white hair talking to a slightly younger bespectacled chap with a mop of greying hair. Both are holding Kölsch glasses. There is dark wood panelling and a lighter wooden table. A napkin reveals that they are at Früh.

Dear Sir:
Mr Benjamin Britten's composition is so very different from the anticipation of the Committee which had hoped to receive from a friendly nation felicitations expressed in musical form on the 2,6ooth anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire.
We are afraid that the composer must have greatly misunderstood our desire or that we did not understand each other fully enough.
It seems to us that this is a composition in the nature of a Requiem Symphony' composed in memory of the composer's own parents and does not express felicitations for the 2,6o0th anniversary of our country.
Besides being purely a religious music of Christian nature, it has melancholy tone both in its melodic pattern and rhythm making it unsuitable for performance on such an occasion as our national ceremony.
We are puzzled and should like to ask that you make further inquiry in this matter. Meanwhile the Committee will hold Mr Britten's composition.

Ich habe einige in Berlin gefunden. Z.B. Schostakowitsch/Kondraschin. Wahrscheinlich bei da capo in der Kastanienallee. Auch lange her. (Wobei… diese sind alle Russisch/Englisch. Vielleicht doch anderswo gefunden. Aber irgendwas habe ich sicher von da capo.)

Today’s office

A church. Lovely sandstone, four rectangular panels on the front topped by surprisingly equilateral triangles and above all that a pointy tower on the left.

Inside. Stained-glass windows, a thing underneath with lots of gold and panels that open out which I was about to call a triptych but there are far too many panels for that, and a bit of percussion, with two big gongs and a bass drum.

No, really, it’s true. About the solo part, I mean. About my rates, I can think of an excellent way for you to find out.

A page of sheet music in what in retrospect is perhaps slightly juvenile handwriting although not too bad for 18 and definitely with more cues than I often have to cope with. Heading top left is CLARINET CONCERTO, top right is THEA MUSGRAVE. Footer reads “solo clarinet (B♭)”.

Actually this seems like a perfect example of why Grimes is (IMO) so amazing. If Britten really did extrapolate Now the Great Bear and Pleiades from this then he's not a magpie, he's a ducking alchemist.
