Here we go: we're entering the last seven days to submit to our second anthology. We're looking for fantastical, wondrous, captivating and eerie tales of spellcasting and sorcery. Give us lyrical prose, experimental fiction, vibrantly imagined tales. In short, stories that reek of magic.

Took the anthology to see a couple of locals yesterday, including the god of the Tyne. I think he approved.

Lastly, I read The Spear Cuts Through Water earlier this year and was awestruck. A queer, high fantasy wuxia-inflected epic with immigrant experiences at its heart, with a touch of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Heartbreaking, extremely gruesome, and the magic is absolutely wild.

I could go on all day, but we'll finish up with a couple of books. Piranesi is a must-read work of modern fantasy, concerning a person living in a peculiar domain of derelict rooms filled with statuary and sloshing tides. Absolutely enchanting.

Speaking of sword and sorcery, I read Imaro by Charles Saunders earlier this year, and was blown away. Imaro's fantasy setting is inspired by the African continent and its folklore. Great prose, lean and mean adventure stories, and has some of the best demonic entities put to paper.

In light of this exception the human authored scheme has, we won't be using it. Obviously spellcheck isn't a gen AI tool (and mentioning it in this context is disingenuous), but this allows AI-driven feedback and idea generation as acceptable use, which doesn't feel in the spirit of the scheme.
