FWIW the article states that 98% of data centres’ energy use will be from renewable sources. Water use will be an issue though.

According to Telus, all three of the projects are planned to run on "98 percent renewable energy" sourced from BC Hydro.

Additionally, they will deploy closed-loop, direct-to-chip cooling systems to reduce environmental impact, and feed waste heat into district networks that the company says will offset power demands in Vancouver. They also claimed to be exploring ways to leverage Vancouver's rainfall as a way to offset water demands. Data centres can consume significant amounts of water, with large facilities potentially using millions of gallons daily, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.

I find this from Bains's Wikipedia bio disqualifying - we need fewer monopolies, not more.

After leaving federal politics, Bains joined CIBC as Vice Chair, Global Investment Banking in September 2021. He left the position in May 2023 and joined Rogers Communications as Chief Corporate Affairs Officer. At Rogers, he reportedly worked on getting the merger between the company and Shaw Communications approved.

Terry Fox, as every Canadian schoolchild knows, ran a marathon a day for 143 days on a single leg to raise money for cancer. The idols of our national sport spit out their teeth and get back in the game. Mr. Carney’s speech offered a glimpse of that spirit, too. What liberal democracies need now, more than ever, is the sheer will to go on, without nostalgia for what once was.

The West is feeling its betrayal turn into rage. The world is waking up to both its vulnerability and its value. But better late than never: We’re all Canadian now.
