So, my mom volunteers for Platner, ran into him more than occasionally early in the campaign. She’ll do funny stuff on occasion, one such stunt was, on impulse, buying him a stuffed animal inspired by the 1936 book Ferdinand. He recognized the reference. Almost burst into tears…. Awkward. 1/
Bringing home Mills' 40k voter is about 1/7th of his challenge. No question, Platner has baggage, but looking at the elections back to 2008, it's fairly clear that establishment Dems running for statewide office bring baggage just for being Democrats. 2/

It should be noted, Paul LePage really kicked off the Trumpist moment by winning a three way race in 2010 with less than 37% of the vote. Eliot Cutler-I was a very good candidate... (35%) Libby Mitchell-D (18%) didn't read the writing on the wall, and LePage got 8 years to field test Trumpism. 6/
I can see how you're reading it. In all seriousness, I think the word count is too low for 'overcompensating' -- the 'blank nothing' seems far closer to the truth, probably symptomatic of his PTSD. 'Sober' impression is a bit on point -- he's very clear on having overused alcohol. 1/

There may be a causal arrow, but there is a basic issue with this analysis: Basically voter participation drops in 1900, bounces around in a similar band. Not to say there are not millions of disaffected voters, or that voters vote by not voting.... but it's really hard to see this as a change.
I had the privilege of staying in Le Château Frontenac on a trip to Quebec -- gorgeous hotel, 'old world charm' entirely uneconomical.... Except that it hosts the _entirety_ of the Canadian judiciary every two years as they polish their French. Quebec City runs on state sponsored tourism.

I would say that a lot of thought needs to go into the way that pro-Democracy forces can recognize, highlight, and make use of divisions between Federal armed forces. My read of Stephen Miller's thinking is that he would expect his little 'army men' to act as he directs. 1/
