August 6, 1945, the US targeted over 100,000 civilians in Hiroshima with an atomic bomb. Below is the shadow of a Japanese image bearer of God burned into the cement. Today is also the Feast of the Transfiguration, the day our Lord became radiant upon Tabor. Behold, our Lord transfigured twice.
Wild Geese by Mary Oliver You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the wor
*Whispers* They do make a thinline CEB with the apocrypha. I have one—with my name and title and everything engraved on the cover.
This necklace is made from chopped gun stock. The organization I got it from receives guns and then turns them into gardening tools, art, and cross necklaces as a Christian witness against gun violence. I thought I had lost it, but I’m so glad I found it while moving. It means a lot to me.
Always a joy to be in the pulpit of sister Baptist churches. #ClergyLife
“Help us make the welfare of all, the supreme law of the land, that so our commonwealth may be built strong and secure, on the love of all its inhabitants.” —The Rev. Walter Rauschenbusch, from a prayer in _For God and the People: Prayers of the Social Awakening_
“When they have opened a gap in the hedge or wall of Separation between the Garden of the Church and the Wildernes of the world, God hath ever broke down the wall it selfe, removed the Candlestick, &c. and made his Garden a Wildernesse, as at this day.” —The Rev. Roger Williams #America250
That is how my copy of the HarperCollins Study Bible (leather bound of course because I’m bougie like that) has it.
Christians, write in your Bibles. Mark them up. Engage with the text and let it engage with you.
To some, this looks like a standard, unassuming edition of the New Oxford Annotated Bible. Most of us who went to seminary probably have this, or have had used it. But to me, this Bible was a gift from my mother. The last one before I moved and married, for the purpose of seminary.
Back on my bs (reading from my heavily marked up and highlighted TNIV)
"I met Christ as a Person at a moment when I needed him in order to live, and at a moment when I was not in search of him. I was found; I did not find him". —Anthony of Sourozh
Al went from being a proud signatory of this document to being the architect of misogynistic exclusion. My heart breaks for Baptist Women today.
The Rev. Linda Barnes Popham, ordained Southern Baptist preacher. She and her church were disfellowshipped by the Executive Committee for being a woman in the pastorate.
My Baptist clergy sisters have this billboard up in Orlando, where the messengers sent to the Southern Baptist Convention will vote on a constitutional amendment further restricting the role of women in ministry. Indeed, God does call women to pastor, preach, and minister. God, not a gaggle of men.
I’m off today (my first day off in two weeks—gotta love ministry!) and my regular, daily use Bibles are in my office an hour away. That means my daily devos are done in an old friend: My large print thinline NIV with center column references in blue buffalo leather.
