I spot Fanny a few tents down, giggling at something another girl just whispered into her ear. A true moment of joy for a girl so rarely without anything to be joyous about. I haven’t been able to give her the childhood she deserves, our safety tenuous and my insubstantial income rarely enough. Camping with the army is hardly a solution, but I don’t think we would mind if the war went on for as long as possible. At least here we are well fed and have more than enough blankets to keep us warm. And William’s foolhardy, stubborn protection.

Improbability

I clenched my hands into fists, breathing deeply, willing the tremulous energy to leave me, or at least to leave my shaking hands. There had been more complicated surgeries and in worse conditions than an airy, abandoned church. But Claire was not just another patient, nor Jamie another terrified spouse. My hands shook at the potential loss of medical brilliance should the surgery fail. At the possible loss of a love so deep and so vast that Jamie, too, would die. I let my eyes close, holding Claire in the Light. Holding us all in the improbability of hope.

My memories of my mother are mostly blurry, as if I cannot trust whether or not they actually happened. As if she was never fully real, never fully mine. But my memories of my sister are clear and solid. They feel sharp in a way that might hurt me if I think of her too much. I am too young to have experienced such loss, William told me. But I have. I have almost nothing of them left. A necklace. A lock of hair. A song. All of which I will keep with me forever. None of which are enough.

I wish he had punched me. Or I him. I long for the clarity that comes from physical action. A punch given or received would have fortified my sense of indignation and hotheaded righteousness. Instead I am left with my swirling rage of thoughts, with no outlet for the betrayals, and no escape from my guilt. I pound my fist hard and repeatedly against my thigh, desperate to find a way to distract myself, but it is for naught. My existence is a lie. I have no idea who I am, and no idea of what about me is true.

I don’t know why it happens, but sometimes I will suddenly remember something Grannie or Grandda would say. They pop into my head at random moments and it suddenly is like one of them is in the room with me again. When I was down in the dam, I kept thinking about what Grandda would do and how brave he would be. But when I got scared and felt tired, it was Grannie who was there to encourage me, just like she always encouraged Grandda. I could hear her whispering “On your feet, soldier,” keeping me safe in the dark.

I’m on his left, probably for the last time on this Earth, and it is foolish, I know, given we have lived an ocean apart for the better part of ten years, but I cannot help but worry who will stand sentry besides him once I am gone. It has been a rare gift, having a brother. To have both the responsibility for and protection of the only person who, at every age, never expected anything from me save myself. He has other friends. He has Claire. But I can help but grieve the loss we must both now endure.

In a sincere but slightly heedless attempt to comfort me, William offhandedly mused, based on the intensity of my grief, he had not realized just how close the Helwater groom and I had been. It was not said unkindly, but like every word of comfort uttered to me these last several days, it was interpreted with a silent, petulant rage. The only person entitled to more rage was his widow, the person I had spent so much of my life envying and despising for having what I could not. And now she was all I had to remember, to protect.

Rollo laid quietly at my feet, curled into a ball, his eyes occasionally shutting before they would snap open again, making sure I was still there. He seemed to believe it was his responsibility to watch me, not the other way around. Maybe that was what Ian actually intended when he left his dog with me. I was surprised to realize I did not mind the idea as much as I thought. It was comforting to know someone besides my brother might care so fiercely about my safety. That he might care about me as much as I do him.

It had been years, a decade, since I last laid eyes on him. Lives converged and diverged between us, our mutual love and devotion to the girls the sole, long fraying thread tethering us together, perhaps finally ready to break. And yet, the sight of him, greying with the requisite wear and tear of age, left me as breathless and covetous as ever. And angry. Angry that the mere sight of this man; this man who effortlessly loved my daughters as his own but could never make an effort to love me; still had such stubborn hold over my heart.

His eyes keep darting back to Buck, his mind knowing there is no immediate threat. But his body thinks otherwise. His throat constricting, the echoes of pain long subsided suddenly searing through him. It is already hard enough to make sense of the man before him being in this place and this time, let alone with having to grapple with what level of hospitality he was supposed to provide the man that sent him to his death. His eyes find Brianna’s, who are observing him with concern, the two of them both trying to remember how they relearned to breathe.

He’s younger, just slightly, than Jamie was when we first met. But there is a hunger in his eyes, a desperate yearning, that is so strikingly evocative of my early days in Jamie’s company. William, like Jamie at that tender age, was struggling to understand, let alone channel his fierce sense of justice productively instead of indiscriminately and often foolishly. As I try to explain this to Jamie, I struggle to articulate why this shared youthful restlessness for good, more than their physical resemblance or aptitude for pigheaded stubbornness, is how I know William will eventually find his way back.

Walter watched as Mrs. Fraser and Dr. Hunter worked in partnership to frustrate the Lieutenant enough to leave him in their care. He had never received much medical care, and the Lieutenant’s gruff communication and outright dismissal of Walter's concerns were not different, and in some ways kinder, than the care he received throughout his life. He was puzzled by how adamantly and forcefully the two were in advocating for what they believed best for him, not for what was most convenient or practical. It was strange, Walter thought, despite his pending amputation, he had never felt more cared for.

Exhaustion weighs heavily as I tell Claire and Ian that I will be joining the fight, despite not wanting to. Despite the bone deep ache for Scotland making me increasingly restless, and a worry I cannot make sense of, as if my body knows something that is yet to be revealed. I had hoped Claire would be more resistant, less readily resigned to another war, another postponed promise of home. Even if this is a war that will be won, I wish it didn’t have to me. Didn’t have to be us fighting it. But for my family, I will.

Modern AU

“Eat your brussel sprouts, please,” Claire chided with playful exasperation.

“Yeah, da! Sprouts yummy!” Faith shouted through a mouthful of said sprouts.

Jamie stabbed a perfectly roasted brussel sprout with his fork and sighed. He was beginning to regret suggesting that they embrace their one-year stay in the U.S. and make a Thanksgiving meal with all of the fixings. Especially when they were working hard with Faith to make sure she tried new foods, and he had to be a good role model.

“Close yer eyes and think of England,” he muttered, grudgingly shoving the sprout into his mouth.

“A letter arrived from maman and papa today, ma chérie,” Fergus told her with a smile as they all sat down to dinner.

As always, she and Fergus would read this one in bed that night, reveling in whatever gossip was swirling around the Ridge that Ma and Da managed to squeeze in their missives in between their pleas for them to come home for a visit.

“Nos chéris,” the letter began in Da’s familiar, angular scrawl. By the end of the letter, they were curled into one another, lacking the words to express their devastation at losing another home.

If her eyes had left Mandy’s face for any time greater than a blink, Brianna would be astonished. There was nothing, save Mandy’s angelic face, that would give her the resolve she needed to uproot her family, to leave her parents. She found herself thinking of her mama, of the sacrifice she made to make sure Brianna was born safely, and how, after finally seeing her and Da together, she understood the enormity of mama’s decision. But she hadn’t appreciated the fervent tenacity of a mother protecting her child, and how nothing else mattered but ensuring her daughter’s every heartbeat.

Breathing
7x01

The difference between his anger and worry was indiscernible, save for the most subtle of tells, at least to start. Which was why Ian was not concerned, when his uncle’s first response to every question was a litany of rage-filled curse words, incoherent and vicious. He had seen his uncle react in the same way many times. And when his uncle later collapsed into a heap, curling into himself, anguish lining his face, Ian was similarly unsurprised. Only Auntie Claire’s absence could elicit such extreme emotions, only Auntie Claire’s return could bring his uncle back to himself; whole and breathing.

They were huddled close together, a blanket and Jamie’s body heat cloaking Claire with the warmth she needed; the crisp autumn air giving way to frigid cold as the sunset below the horizon.

“Remind me again why you were so adamant that we had to stargaze tonight?” Claire asked as she rested her head on his shoulder.

Jamie hummed, as if lost in a happy memory. “Twas the same moon the night we first met twenty five years ago, Sassenach. The first full moon after the harvest moon, shining bright and clear sae I could fall in love with you.”

Faith’s incessant shrieks of joy pulled Claire from her office and the neverending mountain of charts needing to be updated into the late afternoon autumn glow. After some searching, she found Jamie and their three-year-old on the edge of the forest that lined their backyard, piles of leaves taller than Faith dotting the tree line.

“I never understood why people bothered with raking up free fertilizer,” Jamie started, wrapping his arm around her waist. “But,” he added as Faith ran happily screaming into one of the piles, flinging herself down, leaves flying everywhere, “I am starting to understand the appeal.”

“Ye mean tae tell me that ye would go tae a farm and pick apples for fun?” Jamie asked, incredulity heavy in his tone.

I supposed it must sound absurd to him — harvesting food for fun instead of survival — and I couldn’t blame the skeptical quirk in his eyebrow.

“Well,” I bristled playfully, “wouldn’t you think it fun if I came to the orchard with you tomorrow and helped pick apples?”

“Sassenach,” Jamie answered his hands finding purchase on my arse, “ye ken full well if ye come along, the only apples I will have my hands on are yers.”

“Grandda! Guess which one is mine!” Jemmy said eagerly as he pulled Jamie to the two freshly carved jack-o-lanterns.

One of the pumpkins had a defined, simple face; the other lopsided eyes, a crooked nose, and an uneven, gaping mouth. Jemmy bounced with an anxious excitement, waiting for his grandda to guess, which Jamie did, confidently gesturing to the one on the right.

“No, Grandda!” Jemmy laughed. “Grandma carved that one!”

Later, when retelling the story to Claire, Jamie teased lovingly, his arms pulling her close to him, “It’s a good thing ye operate on humans and not pumpkins, Sassenach.”

Modern AU

“Is it over, Sassenach?” Jamie’s weary voice pressed against the crook of my neck; the screams fading to faint echoes and small, breathless gasps.

“I think so, but there might be a surprise or two left,” I whispered gently.

It probably wasn’t the right moment to remind my boyfriend that the haunted hayride had been his idea, promising if I got frightened, he would gallantly defend me from the scary wee beasties. And it could wait until later to tell him I said yes because I knew it would end with him burrowing into me; me getting to protect him.

They both knew, acutely, biology had little to do with fatherhood. But she hadn’t been left to wonder about either of her fathers or their devotion to her. She wondered if that was her barrier to understanding Roger’s inability to trust, whatever Jemmy’s biology, his father was the man who tucked him in each night with a song. Was the man who carved his toys out of wood and listened to Jemmy’s stories with unwavering attention. Brianna was glad Roger now had confirmation for, what for her, was a matter resolved the moment Roger first held Jemmy in his arms.

Having Brianna grapple with faith and religion in just 100 words was an interesting choice. 😅 But it was a fun thought exercise at least!

Brianna’s understanding of religion was largely academic, having grown up with parents who never prioritized developing her spiritual being. As a historian, Daddy ensured Brianna appreciated how religions emerged and the way power was wielded in the name of one god or another. Mama was more confusing. She would occasionally escape to church to find solace or whisper Latin prayers in moments of need, but she never would claim to be “religious.” But as they prepared to go to seminary, for Roger to become a priest, Brianna finally realized why mama held so closely to a faith she didn’t claim.

It was easier, Brianna learned, to sit in fervent, silent vigil with mama, a neverending stream of prayers and fears warring in her thoughts, than it was to comfort da. He was inconsolable, radiating a profound grief that caused her own to escalate to the point of immobilized panic. One of them needed to keep their anguish at bay. Needed to remain clearheaded enough to make decisions, to keep their light alive. She knew nothing, save for mama’s soft gaze of affection and whispered reassurances, would ameliorate da’s agony; so she pleaded with mama, not wanting to lose them both.
