Casual Trek
@casualtrek
Star Trek Podcast where two casual Star Trek fans try and rank every episode of Star Trek on a big list.
Recording some non-Big List eps on Monday because hey, it’s Summer- one is a sequel to one of our earlier episodes when we talked about Chris Claremont’s #StarTrek TOS graphic novel Debt of Honor and the oft mentioned ‘The Black Hole’, back when Disney didn’t own Star Wars but wanted Star Wars $$$!
In “Workforce”, almost all of Voyager’s crew have been abducted and made into happy workers at an alien factory. Harry Kim is a whiner, Janeway gets a romance plot and Tom Paris can’t even hack being a brainwashed worker! Work hard. Increase Production. Be Happy.
In “Hard Time”, Miles O’Brien lives out a gruelling, decades long prison sentence in mere moments. Will he be able to mentally recover, or will we watch the rest of DS9 knowing that he’s got this prison time and murder still haunting him?
Finally, ‘Missing Link‘ gives us a guest turn by Peter Cushing in a costume choice slightly more dignified than Christopher Lee back in Space Scamps II and Charlie asks us a terrifying question… why have we not watched any season 2 yet… #Treksky #space1999 (4/4)
‘Alpha Child’ gives us evil children as the first child born on Alpha ends with what might be weird cosmic space incest with Julian Glover. #Treksky #Space1999 (3/4)
We’ve an unintentional theme of guest stars here ‘Force of Life’ gives us a young Ian McShane coming down with a bad case of heat vamperism after a bad encounter with a weird glowing space thingy. #Treksky #Space1999 (2/4)
And then for the main event, we finally climb the mountain that is Star Trek V- The Final Frontier where Bones gets to spread his theatre chops, Spock nerve pinches a horse, we meet a Big Giant Head. Also Shatner gets to have a little run around, good for him. Rank and review, Go Climb a Rock! (3/3)
To begin, we delve to the strange animated realm of ‘The Magicks of Megas-Tu’ and discover that not only did Satan canonically exist in #StarTrek, but he’s fun to have a pint with! How did the FCC let this slide? We don’t know, we’re British and for us it was Mary Whitehouse and Video Nasties! (2/3)
We’re recording a new episode tomorrow. Spoiler alert- one of these is FAR better than the other. One of these also has a theme tune by Jonathan Coulton… which might be in its favour. #Treksky #StarTrek #dopeoplestillmakethecakeisaliememes
#startrek #podtrek #treksky Tomorrow @skyshark.itch.io and @milesreidlobatto.bsky.social do not ‘go climb a rock’ but instead outsource that to someone who wants to make love to the mountain.
Next up is “Beta Test” which gives more of a sense of what the show’s going to be. We’ve got fun lessons, space politics and the Marissa to Caleb Mir’s Ryan in Tarima, a Betazoid princess with uncontrollable psychic powers. There’s so much more, but listen to the episode and check it out!
In “Kids These Days”, The Burn Era Starfleet let Caleb Mir and others down and now they’re going to make up for it for him and several weird nerds around the universe. He may be a bit of a Dal, but he has a fun dynamic with Nahla Ake and a sinister Paul Giamatti.
According to our updated records, we have seen 20.55% of #StarTrek. Go Team.
Last up is “All is Possible” is a surprisingly good backdoor pilot and explanation for Starfleet Academy taking place in the grimdark future. Also Michael Burnham makes everything about her again.
“Valiant” has Nog fall in with a bunch of rogue cadets who have been behind enemy lines too long and it leads to disaster.
“The First Duty” has that Crusher boy falling in with a bad crowd, including a cadet who looks suspiciously like Tom Paris.
It’s time for a new episode of Casual Trek. This time we’re looking at stories about Starfleet Academy before cracking on with the new television show in our next episode! open.spotify.com/episode/4UFY...
It’s Christmas and we’re doing something different! Instead of our usual episode gifting, we decided to get @seanorange.bsky.social and show editor @reannamator.bsky.social to watch ‘Galaxy Quest’ with us for a fun Xmas party! #Startrek open.spotify.com/episode/1U7T...
Our last episode is DS9’s Empok Nor where Miles O’Brian’s trip to an abandoned Cardassian space station for important parts causes Garak to accidentally get high on psychotropic drugs and turns him into an (even more) dangerous killer! #startrek #halloween (4/4)
Our second episode is Voyager’s ‘Darkling’ where the Doctor’s attempts at self-improvement by adding bits of famous people into his personality goes very very wrong causing the birth of an evil Doctor! Isn’t that always the way? (3/4) #startrek #halloween
First episode is ‘Wolf in the Fold’ where McCoy’s attempts to get Scotty some (for work reasons, honest) end in many many murders and leads us to ask… is Scotty Jack the Ripper? (2/4) #startrek #halloween
It’s the Halloween Time here on Casual Trek and we’re going full Altered States with our episode theme! As always, we’re on all good podcatchers and please rate and review us there! (1/4) #startrek #halloween open.spotify.com/episode/4HHM...
We’ve been threatening Miles with the possibility of this one since we started and we’re finally going through with it alongside its glacial pacing and it’s incredibly not great art.
