OMG I wouldn't usually say goats cheese, but we went to a place called 'Pick & Cheese', where they serve you small portions of lots of different cheese+sides, & we had this St Ella with Turkish delight and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten.

I just read Then We'll Be Happy, #ownvoices #disability rep from debut Irish YA author Alan Carrigan. He and his protagonist, Sam, have cerebral palsy and a great sense of humour. Sam also has to deal with every day (& internalised) ableism. A great read, thanks @chickenhousebooks.bsky.social!

I remember enjoying this but it was 20 years ago so I can't actually remember how good the story was and whether it was just that I know the story and enjoyed the illustrations, if you see what I mean!

Introduction:
Have you ever been inside an art gallery? What do you think - fun or boring, interesting or unwelcoming? Do you have any favourite pictures? Are they big, small, wide, thin? Of animals, queens, landscapes or people?
I love going to galleries. I've been going all my life, ever since I was five or six, when my older sister would take me on a Saturday afternoon. We always brought our sketchbooks, and drew what we saw.
Sometimes, it's difficult to relate to the people in the pictures. They can be from 10, 50, 100 or even 500 years ago, living a life that is very different to both yours and mine. Yet we still write and talk about them, and go and visit them in galleries. So, WHAT'S THE FUSS?

BUT WHY IS THIS A HISTORY OF ART WITHOUT MEN?
At the grand old age of 21, I noticed something. I was visiting an art fair (like a big shop, where galleries sell pictures by artists). I looked around the artworks, and realized not a single one was by a woman. I was shocked! Not only because of the lack of female artists on view, but because I realized I couldn't name ten female artists myself - let alone any working over 100 years ago.
That night, I couldn't sleep. I began an Instagram page and called it 'The Great Women Artists'. The aim then, as it still is now, was to share the work of women artists.
And now I've put it into a book. This is a celebration of women in art from the 1500s to the present day. But it can also be your guide to art history, helping you understand and appreciate the works.
Who knows, maybe it will encourage you to make some art too!
If you notice that a certain community or group of people aren't being talked about, do whatever you can (no matter how big or small) to make a difference. This could include drawing a picture, writing a story or telling your teachers that they've forgotten someone or something.

Last week @littleislandbooks.bsky.social sent me a copy of this verse YA novel by @rurooie.bsky.social & I have devoured it today over 2 heartbreaking bus journeys. Shorelines is a retelling of The Little Mermaid & completely not was I expecting, full of rage & injustice.
