Castrovince: This parity does not exist in October. The math shows it. Taking a snapshot of the standings on July 28, 2026 achieves nothing. And it's really hard, intellectually, to simultaneously argue that teams don't spend enough while saying small-budget teams are faring just fine as is.

I live in Cleveland. I'll be accused of licking billionaire boots, but I see first-hand virtually every year that you can be an intelligently run team and then get waxed in October by rich dudes hitting homers. Baseball's "parity" comes from playoff expansion/Central Divisions.

Under a cap, another key matter would have to be negotiated: how often the union could ask for a financial audit of the league office and the 30 teams.

The league proposed 10 audits, which would be fewer than are available in other cap systems. The NBA union is permitted an average of 15 per year, while the unions in the NFL and NHL have no limit.

Caplin said that MLB is providing “comparable independent audit rights and protections as the other unions.”

The answer is laid out in a lengthy proposal MLB made on May 28, which was reviewed by The Athletic and includes a calculation MLB is dubbing just “baseball revenue,” or BR.

It has no shortage of deductions.

MLB could take up to 17 percent of local revenues off the top annually as expenses, plus up to 22 percent of national revenues. Plus, some areas would have no expense cap, such as construction and renovation costs for ballparks, including spring-training facilities.

The league-run TV station MLB Network would have no deduction limit, and for 2027 and 2028, neither would costs from any team’s local broadcasts.

The league also wants unlimited deductions for what it broadly termed “new ventures.”

I work for MLB obviously. But I can understand, in theory, why a cap/floor is a + for fans and, by extension, revenue growth.

I don’t understand how MLBPA proposals (so far at least) are a + for fans and growth, though I welcome explanations.

The owners in Major League Baseball aren’t entitled to a profit just because the last few decades have provided one. Owners like to say that baseball is a business, that capital is entitled to its profits because it takes all the risks. Ownership has certainly taken the profits over these last few decades, but now that they are in question, they’re asking players to share the pain; owners seek to inoculate themselves from the very risk used to justify their percentage of the profits. More succinctly, they’ve privatized the profits, and now want to socialize the losses.

The union argues that trickle-down economics work in MLB. Yes, elite players have functioned as price setters in the baseball labor market as their earnings influence the free agent, arbitration, and extension markets.

But those trickle-down economics do not reach the largest cohort of players: the pre-arbitration players. They play at or near the league minimum.

Over the long term, this economic framework could be a massive tailwind.

Combined with a salary floor and cap, and shared media dollars, there would likely be an increase in revenues because there would be more fan bases invested. *More balance would almost certainly lead to greater TV deals* as it would be a less bifurcated sport.

The MLBPA's top objection is that salary caps reduce the earnings potential of the league's highest-paid players. Significant restrictions are placed on the top of the player pay pyramid in this proposal.

But the disagreement is less about whether players should be paid more or less in aggregate, and more about which point in the career curve the marginal dollar should be concentrated.

this would seem to be the time to mention that the ownership proposal also barring high school players from the draft and raising the ifa entry age to 18. Wonder if those would help or hurt this trend you're describing

Players are debuting later, and spending fewer years in the Major Leagues.

Over the last 40 years, average player age is on a slow descent, declining by 0.7 years from an average of 28.6 years over the 1986-88 seasons, to 27.9 years over the last three seasons.

Meanwhile, the average debut age increased from an average of 23.7 (1986-88) to 25.1 years over the last three seasons.

Player careers are being pinched at their beginnings and endings.
