A one star letterboxed review for The Devil Wears Prada 2 reads: “Whatever this movie might have had to say about the dual deaths of journalism and print media in the 20 years since the first film is lost beneath dead air, first draft dialogue and a staggering lack of momentum. Baked a wee lemon bundt for a friend’s birthday.

We got one of those art frame TV’s for the office, but did not realise you need to get a subscription to their art archive and haven’t had time to explore alternative options, so I’m spending my days haunted by the offerings of the free tier.

A flat-screen TV mounted on a wall depicts a baby’s feet in monochrome. This is not the poster’s baby. She doesn’t know whose baby it is. Soon the baby’s feet will be replaced by clip art of a tennis racquet, and then by some misshaped cats.

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.

The Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad to come play in the snow with him. His dad initially says no, because he has to work. Then, angry at himself, his Dad goes out to build a snowman with Calvin. As the Dad works into the night to make up for it, we see Calvin’s mum lifting him up to give one of the few, if only, kisses he ever gives his dad in the Calvin and Hobbes run. His dad is content. It’s a textless comic, and it’s lovely.
