Facts and values. Both are important, but sometimes one masquerades as the other.

The UCD press release, "California wolves feed heavily on cattle," appears to be purely fact-based, describing a study indicating two northeastern California wolf packs have been eating primarily cattle.

But values are there, too — they're just hiding. They become apparent when you explore unstated assumptions along with questions asked and not asked.

The study's published article states, "Systematic extirpation resulted in [wolves] near-complete elimination from the contiguous United States by the mid-1900s."

Translation: There was a deliberate, federally-funded campaign to eliminate wolves in the U.S. in the early 1900s. That attitude — seeing wolves as interlopers to be destroyed — forms the backdrop for today's attitudes about wolves.

When a study focuses on the percentage of a wolf's diet that includes cattle, when it discusses "stressed cattle" who are raised only to be eaten, it's no surprise to learn that funding came from a Rangeland and Cattle Research Endowment and California Cattle Council.

This is about rancher money.

Also in the background: The cattle roam over public land. Is that land being put to its best use? Can we lessen our reliance on cattle for food and keep looking for better strategies to live with wolves?

We treat wolves as intruders rather than members of our community when we focus only on their actions and not our own.

I have no quarrel with the facts of the study, but its values deserve a second look.

Here I spread the word about facts and values in discussions of CA wolves — my letter to the editor responding to a recent study done by some UC Davis researchers, published in today's San Francisco Chronicle. Alas, they didn't print my plug for _The Land Is Our Community_, but what can you do? 😁

Cohabitate with wolves

Regarding “Study reveals what California wolves are eating. And it’s not good” (California, SFChronicle.com, July 8): Facts and values are important, but sometimes one masquerades as the other.

We are former staff members of Congresswoman Katie Porter. We served in her congressional
office and on her campaigns, and we know what it is like to work with her up close, day after
day. We believe the public should understand the full person we know, not a caricature built
from a few clips on a bad day.
Here is what does not make the news: Katie shows up for her team. When we were dealing
with illness, grief, or family emergencies, she supported us in ways that were real and
personal. She demanded a lot, but she also fought for us, mentored us, and stood by us when
life got hard. She showed up not just in the hardest moments but also in the best ones, at our
weddings, celebrating the births of our children, and offering guidance as we navigated the
next steps in our lives and careers. Whether it was a successful committee hearing, a
fundraising quarter, or an in-district town hall, Katie recognized these wins as a team effort.
The traits that make Katie effective don’t always look soft around the edges. People are drawn
to Katie's leadership because she is a workhorse. She asked of us what she expected of herself.
We have worked for other members of Congress, senior military leaders, executive branch
officials, and in demanding private-sector roles. Without hesitation, Katie’s standards were
among the highest. But that’s one reason we chose to work for her. We know that Katie got
into politics and policy for many of the same reasons we did: to reform broken systems, serve
people, and accomplish big things. A few video clips of our worst moments are not the full or
honest measure of Katie or anyone’s career. That’s the truth.

Further protests are likely to materialize in major cities across the US. Authorities will probably deploy security officers to monitor any demonstrations that materialize. Localized transport and business disruptions will likely affect areas subject to protest activity. Clashes between protesters and security forces may occur, particularly if authorities attempt to break up demonstrations deemed overly disruptive. Officers might use crowd control methods, including the use of tear gas.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent areas affected by protest activity. Account for likely disruptions affecting businesses near protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from local authorities and law enforcement officers. The Land Is Our Community would make a valuable companion volume to Leopold’s writings in environmental ethics or philosophy classes. Perhaps the book’s most notable synthesis of materials is the way in which Leopold’s ideas are put in dialogue with more contemporary ecological research. The other stand-out portion of the book is the discussion of what community-based conservation could look like in practice when a plurality of interest groups is included in the decision-making process. There is no pat formula for success here, as anyone involved in such messy and sometimes fraught community efforts will know, but Millstein deftly draws out the most salient ideas—what she calls the eight subprinciples of Leopold’s ‘Principle of Integration of Land Uses’—that could facilitate long-term partnership and community land care.

Dartmouth has rejected Trump's compact. Here is the response from Dartmouth Courage, www.dartmouthcourage.com, a coalition of Dartmouth alumni.

We applaud President Beilock and the Dartmouth Board of Trustees for their decision to reject the Trump Administration’s proposed “Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education.” In doing so, Dartmouth joins MIT, Brown, Penn, USC, and UVA in refusing to compromise institutional independence in exchange for preferential federal funding.
President Beilock made clear that “the involvement of the government through a compact—whether it is a Republican- or Democratic-led White House—is not the right way to focus America’s leading colleges and universities on their teaching and research mission.” This statement reflects a vital principle: No administration has the authority to demand political “compacts” that impose ideological compliance as a condition for federal research funding or academic legitimacy.
This is not merely the rejection of a single proposal—it is a clear repudiation of the tactic itself. This decision is a milestone in an ongoing struggle to defend American universities from political interference. Dartmouth now has both an opportunity and an obligation to stand visibly and vocally for the principles to which President Beilock has said she is committed.
While we commend Dartmouth’s rejection of the compact, we remain vigilant about what comes next. President Beilock stated she is “open to other ways to work with the federal government to enhance higher education.” But many of the compact’s proposals would weaken higher education, not improve it—and we are skeptical that this White House genuinely seeks to strengthen universities rather than control them.
As Dartmouth Courage, we will continue to advocate for freedom of thought and expression, institutional autonomy, and the promotion of diversity in all its forms. The next Alumni Council meeting is November 13-15, and Dartmouth Courage will call upon our alumni representatives to stand with the more than 1300 alums and 569 faculty members who have spoken out to ensure that the Board of Trustees and…
