Ireland’s biggest independent bookstore - new, secondhand & bargain books - where you find what you didn’t know you were looking for! An Post Bookshop of the Year 🏆
A collection like this is the faint outline of a reader: clever, opinionated, politically alert and possibly exhausting. I feel cleverer just standing near their books. 3/3
I would be far too intimidated to speak to them. But I would happily sit at the next table in a café, order another coffee and listen shamelessly. 2/3
I want to know who owned these. Who read Burr, Kalki, Creation and The City and the Pillar, then kept them together all these years? Where did they live? What did they do? Did they smoke? 1/3
We have things going on ... of course we do! Why take a summer holiday when we could be walking around saying, "What should we do next?" Store is operating as normal, but please keep an eye out for the changes and let us know what you think!
Which came first: the chicken, the egg, or the 700-page omnibus declaring both heretics? With us, the books came first. Now we’ve minis, paint, the magazine and a very fancy Black Library FSDU full of books! Warhammer fans: best starter read? #Warhammer #BlackLibrary
What are you doing on Wednesday? Wrong. You’re coming to Chapters to drink French wine in a bookshop like a cultured menace! THE FRENCH CORRECTION - Wed July 22nd, 7pm with Lorcan O'Brien. Welcome Crémant, 5 wines, charcuterie boxes & 20% off books/wine. Tickets on Eventbrite!
I owe my first love an apology - last week I was distracted by shiny new books, impressive authors, signings & cakes. Meanwhile, Secondhand gave: illustrated Spanish Jules Verne, vintage Flowers for Algernon film tie-in & a glorious yellow Gollancz SF. Old books, I am sorry. You remain undefeated!
Sometimes Secondhand books come with extra artwork … 😂
Stolen from the other place - credit belongs to Twig and Toad Soap.
We then had the loveliest evening with Andrew Porter. He was warm, funny, patient & remarkably cheerful while signing enormous stacks of books bearing his own face. Heart on My Sleeve is a very suprising book - much more moving, thoughtful & honest than I expected ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2/2
I think I have read three sports books in my life: The Racket by Conor Niland. King Kenny, about Kenny Dalglish. And now Heart on My Sleeve by Andrew Porter. At this rate, I may have to admit that I read sports books ... 🤭 1/2
On Saturday we had the privilege of listening to Hannah Whitten & Sarah Rees Brennan in conversation. Women have always used fantasy, horror & speculative fiction to ask huge questions – Shelley & Atwood for starters - now a new generation carry the baton with confidence, wit & power. Brilliant!
Jane Casey has signed first-run copies of Everything She Didn’t Say, complete with red sprayed edges and one tiny back-cover typo we are absolutely not identifying. A thriller with a mystery before page one. Buy it. Read it. Investigate it. Keep it. Backlist signed too! @janecasey.bsky.social
Catherine Ryan Howard’s attention to detail is why her thrillers are so clever, compelling & genuinely terrifying. I still haven’t recovered from The Trap & that was two books ago. Now Buyer Beware has arrived, accompanied by cupcakes with tiny edible book covers. Signed copies instore & online!
Andrew Porter signs Heart on My Sleeve instore Thursday 16 July, at 6pm. Far more than a rugby memoir: an honest book about grief, family, masculinity, mental health and learning that strength needn’t mean silence. Free event. All welcome. Grab the chance and pop down!
Many of Our Best Lie There by Derek Molyneux & Darren Kelly is at No. 1 & we doubt it will be its only chart appearance. I am reading the series - Killing at Its Very Extreme, Someone Has to Die for This & Tomorrow with Bayonets - really readable & granular in its research. 2/2
I am so childish at times! We have something nobody else does (what is rare is wonderful 🤦♀️😂)
Hannah Whitten TONIGHT from 6pm, in conversation with always wonderful Sarah Rees Brennan! A very rare chance to hear this New York Times bestselling author in Dublin & pre-release copies of 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 will be available on the night. Come down and join us!
With all the Odyssey talk around, we present: The Iliad. Yes, different epic. Please don’t be tiresome! Pre-owned, pre-loved, extremely well-read & perfect for placing beside your coffee while you look tragically into the middle distance and pretend to understand Greek rage.
Things we find in books: pressed flowers inside an 1809 volume of Imperial Statutes. The book is 217 years old. Are the flowers? Probably not. Are we choosing to believe some dramatic Georgian soul left them there after a meaningful walk? Absolutely. 🌿📚
Jessica Scott-Whyte called in to sign her new new, funny novel for readers aged 8+ - SÉAMUS ALMOST FAMOUS, illustrated by Becka Moor. Séamus is 11, from Callan, and the only person in his family who isn’t famous. A terrible burden. Thoughts and prayers!
A stack of 10 Supernatural novels has landed in Secondhand & somewhere a dormant Tumblr account has just reactivated itself! Nevermore, Witch’s Canyon, Bone Key, Night Terror, Fresh Meat, Coyote’s Kiss & more. Flannel. Folklore. Emotional damage. While stocks last. Bring salt. 🖤📚
We have the most incredible book - the Odyssey vol of Homeri Ilias & Odyssea, published in 1711 by Joshua Barnes, a quarto edition of Homer's epics. It features the original Greek texts, Latin translations, historical scholia & additional poems etc.
Things we find in books: receipts, postcards, shopping lists… and today, two incredible old envelopes! We are not stamp experts, but we are absolutely prepared to become insufferable about postmarks for the afternoon. Old envelopes had STYLE. 📮📚
We have signed copies of 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 by Vicki Notaro! Warm, funny, generous & gently confronting. A book about friendship, belonging, family and the communities we build around ourselves. Commercial fiction matters. This is a good book!
Things we find in books: receipts, bookmarks, shopping lists… and Rio’s hand-drawn comic-strip version of The Iliad! Plague, gods, sulking heroes, tiny dramatic tents. Honestly, this may be the most useful study guide Homer ever had. Rio, we are fans. ✏️📚❤️
I remember cartridges that sucked up the ink - then Parker got fancier with a tube that sort of drew up the ink! I e just checked - I still have the cartridge!
Signed copies of The Life Swap by Jeananne Craig are instore & online now! Two sisters. Two messy lives. One plan that is absolutely, definitely going to fix everything. Jeananne also brought sweets, which we are not saying influenced us, but we are only human. Warm, funny, Irish & very giftable
It is absolutely an evening for sitting outside with a book & something cold and fizzy. Our Treat Yourself Bundle: The Correspondent by Virginia Evans & Gran Barón Brut Cava for €24.99. I’ve asked Mick to bring one home - both professional research & marital delegation! Over 18s only.
I seem to post Star Wars a lot ... but mainly because it comes in a lot and goes out quickly ... there are some serious collectors out there trying to complete series! Good luck out there! 2/2
