Something appears to have red-pilled Pope Leo XIV, who used a whole bunch of words today to nearly go full-MAGA about the issue of immigration.

Human dignity, he said, "requires legal and safe routes, rescue and assistance, real cooperation against traffickers, effective protection for victims, serious processes of

welcome and integration, and policies that allow each person to live with dignity in his or her own land."

Did he say "legal?" I think he did.

In 1920s Austria, the center-left also proved incapable of standing up for itself in the face of ascendant fascism, demonstrating what one writer has described as social democracy's "serial failure of nerve." (from "Vienna: How the City of Ideas Created the Modern World" by Richard Cockett)

For certain Viennese on the left, the rot set in as early as July 1927, when the Social Democrat city council had apparently allowed the police to gun down eighty-nine of their own supporters. These people had been protesting against a court verdict releasing three right-wing paramilitaries who had killed two of their own in an ambush. In retaliation, the protestors stormed and set fire to the city's Palace of Justice, provoking the police into their murderous assault. As well as the dead, another 500 or so were injured. The Social Democrat mayor, Karl Seitz, had tried to persuade the demon- strators to disperse before the police charged in, but to no avail.

Even at the time, the bloody events of 15 July appeared to many to be a fork in the road. Take Ilona Duczynska, for instance, the wife of the socialist journalist and economist Karl Polanyi. Born near Vienna to Hungarian and Polish parents, up to that point she was a fervent supporter of the Social Democrats. Holidaying at a Danubian resort on the day, she hurried back to the city as news of the massacre spread. Using a press pass to cross police lines, Duczynska was appalled by the devastating scenes, akin to the Peterloo Massacre, and was equally dismayed by the 'total irrelevance' at this vital juncture of the social democrat leadership and their failure to immediately mobilise the Schutzbund and issue arms to protect the working class. For Duczynska the debacle set an unhappy precedent of constant retreat by the Social Democrats before the more ruthless and determined forces of the right. "The powerful potential of the Austrian workers' movement,' she argued, was 'frittered away in a long drawn-out process of yielding one position after the other 42 One modern writer has called this process social democracy's 'serial failure of nerve'.43
