⛏ William Whitehead Watts, geologist who studied Charnwood Forest, died on this day in 1947. 📕 Watts was a President of the Geological Society, and Fellow of the Royal Society, and published the book 'Geology of the Ancient Rocks of Charnwood Forest'.

🇨🇦 In 2022, we launched a sistership agreement with the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark in Canada. This link builds on our shared geological heritage - they have fossils in their Geopark, such as Charnia, that were first named from Charnwood Forest.

👉 This week our team have been sharing the story of Charnwood Forest at the UK UNESCO Chairs’ Conference at Loughborough University. As we work towards our own UNESCO designation, it was a pleasure to welcome the UK’s UNESCO-affiliated researchers to our region.

📅 Cecil Terence Ingold was born on this day in 1905. 💧 In 1942, Ingold described several new species of freshwater fungi from "a small stream which drains Cropston Reservoir" in Charnwood Forest. More than 300 species of these 'Ingoldian fungi' have now been discovered.
🚶 Did you know, Charnwood Forest Geopark supported the creation of the roadside footpath along Breakback Road - providing a safer walking route between Outwoods and Beacon Hill. This work was supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
