The American Chemical Society has written a letter to members, telling us that they have submitted a comment on the OMB proposed regulation.

Dear Cheryl,

Advocating for science and the chemistry enterprise is one of the most important ways ACS serves you, our members.

Today, ACS submitted a formal public comment to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in response to its proposed Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance. In our comment, we urged substantial revisions to the proposed rule to continue the investments in the U.S. scientific research enterprise that drive innovation, economic growth, and global competitiveness.

Our response reflects weeks of engagement with ACS members, staff, and partners across academia, industry, and government, as well as the broader scientific community. Together, we agreed that several provisions in the proposed rule could weaken merit-based peer review, limit scientific collaboration, impede scientific dialogue, and create unnecessary uncertainty for scientists conducting federally funded research. We are especially grateful to those of you in the ACS community who joined us in acting. Through our Act4Chemistry campaign, hundreds of you across the U.S. chemistry community submitted your own comments, sharing firsthand how these proposed changes could affect your ability to do research that drives innovation and enables scientific progress. Your voices demonstrate the depth and breadth of concern across our scientific community. If you haven’t already submitted a comment, there is still time for you to submit one.

Advocacy in public policy is most effective when we work together. By combining your individual expertise and experiences with the collective voice of ACS, we can help shape policies that strengthen scientific discovery, innovation, and the advancement of science for the benefit of society.

ACS will continue to monitor the status of this proposed rule, engage with policymakers, and keep our community updated on further developments. You can continue engaging in our advocacy efforts by joining Act4Chemistry.

Here is a piece of petrified wood from near Creswell, Oregon. I love petrified wood with knots in it. I figure this is from one of the forests that got buried by volcanic eruptions. I am still learning Oregon geology.
