The absolute pinnacle of this has to be that time a Nintendo magazine in the UK ran a competition where you’d win 2 free games a month for a year if you sent in a photo of the ugliest person you could find on the street. Imagine the outrage if you hosted something like this today.

As a kid I had this software called The 3D Game Maker and it was incredibly basic and not really that much more than a glorified level editor with some preset gameplay types (like fps, racer, platformer, etc) you could export as stand alone but it was absolutely mind blowing to 13 year old me.
