A Guardian investigation reveals internal US and UK warnings were sidelined. US state department intelligence assessments that would have triggered obligations to save El Fasher were buried.

The UK seemingly abandoned El Fasher: reports predicting genocide apparently discarded; intelligence apparatus that should have prompted intervention were not updated throughout the 561-day siege.

As fighting had intensified, the UK removed Darfur’s original genocide – when 300,000 were slaughtered by the RSF’s Arab predecessors – from its list of recognised mass atrocities.

Fresh questions also emerge for the RSF’s principal backer, the United Arab Emirates, which made extraordinary attempts to conceal its alleged involvement in El Fasher’s bloody takeover. The UAE denies providing military support to the militia.

Over two days – 26 and 27 October 2025 – analysts believe up to 10,000 people in the city were massacred. At least 40,000 others remain unaccounted for, according to Darfur’s governor.

In S.A. 3434 the Last Alliance entered Mordor. The Orcs that survived the slaughter at Dagorlad were surrounded in Barad-dûr, Sauron's dark stronghold. There, the forces of Gil-galad, Elendil and Thranduil laid siege to the tower, but could not breach its gates.

Sauron put together a strong defence with a seemingly inexhaustible supply of projectile and sorties throughout seven years, during which the Allies suffered heavy casualties. In S.A. 3440, Anárion's helmet was crushed by a thrown rock resulting in his death.

A year later, however, Sauron went out with a sortie himself and broke the leaguer. He came to Mount Doom, where the two kings, Gil-galad and Elendil, fought with him in single combat. Sauron struck down Elendil, and his sword Narsil broke in two beneath him as he fell. Gil-galad was scorched by the heat of Sauron's hand, killing him. Nonetheless, Sauron was defeated in the fight with the two kings, and Isildur took up the broken remnant of his father's blade and cut the Ring from Sauron's hand.

Agentic AI and the next intelligence explosion

The "AI singularity" is often miscast as a monolithic, godlike mind. Evolution suggests a different path: intelligence is fundamentally plural, social, and relational. Recent advances in agentic AI reveal that frontier reasoning models, such as DeepSeek-R1, do not improve simply by "thinking longer". Instead, they simulate internal "societies of thought," spontaneous cognitive debates that argue, verify, and reconcile to solve complex tasks. Moreover, we are entering an era of human-AI centaurs: hybrid actors where collective agency transcends individual control. Scaling this intelligence requires shifting from dyadic alignment (RLHF) toward institutional alignment. By designing digital protocols, modeled on organizations and markets, we can build a social infrastructure of checks and balances. The next intelligence explosion will not be a single silicon brain, but a complex, combinatorial society specializing and sprawling like a city. No mind is an island.

However generative AI changes video development and production, it appears that Sora will end up as a footnote, rather than a game-changing piece of software.

It also puts Google in a position of power when it comes to AI video generation, making it essentially the only player in the space with scale, though it has thus far not inked any deals with IP holders (and in fact has been facing lawsuits from some of them).

Data hoarding in a segregated world

With everything happening in the past year, from Internet blackouts becoming the norm in more and more parts of the world, to the US government demanding that Tech Giants cut services to organizations that the administration doesn't like, and laws like the digital ID acts that require websites and even operating systems to identify and track everyone, I think it's pretty much a given that we're headed into a more segregated world, with lots of smaller Internets and digital services providers. I think data hoarders are likely to play an important role in such a world, where data becomes gated and unavailable. Has anyone experienced anything like that in their country/community yet, or is preparing for it?

The mod was influenced by some socialist cybernetic experiments of the 60s/70s (OGAS, Cybersin) and in part by Iain Banks Culture series novels.
