“We don’t have all that information yet, and so we don’t have a good model to use as a replacement for the linear no-threshold,” Little said.

Little said HPS supports continued funding for the Million Person Study, which collects dosimetric information for over a million workers in various fields and compares that data to the workers’ eventual causes of death. “It’s a small program, and it just cannot get consistently funded. I think if it had $5 or $10 million, it would be complete,” Little said.

Remember: Watergate was far more than just a break-in at Democratic Party headquarters in the Washington office/apartment complex that gave the scandal its name. The burglary merely led to the exposure of the rot within the Nixon administration: a mountain of criminal acts from money laundering to obstruction of justice to multiple additional break-ins to a shocking abuse of government power.

At one point, White House counsel John Dean, who later located his conscience and told the public what he had seen and done, penned a memo for other White House officials exploring “how we can use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies.” The White House tapes recorded Nixon personally committing criminal acts, including making a plan to order the CIA to quash the FBI’s investigation of the break-in at the Watergate (the so-called “smoking gun” recording).

The case underlying Jackson’s decision is Parker v. Hooper. In 2015, incarcerated men sued the DOC, alleging that the healthcare provided at Angola was so deplorable that it violated the Eighth Amendment and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In March, the Fifth Circuit ruled that because corrections officials had instituted some changes since the lawsuit was filed, the plaintiffs had not met their burden to show deliberate indifference and sent the case back down to a lower court for review.

In her majority opinion, Judge Edith Jones wrote that actions, even insufficient ones, “indicate concern and sincerity on the part of prison officials,” and, therefore, nullify an Eighth Amendment claim. Jones, who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan, once allegedly said in a speech to the Federalist Society that “racial groups like African-Americans and Hispanics are predisposed to crime.”The Court also rejected the plaintiffs’ ADA claim, writing that the lower court “discounted improvements that it knew had been made for the benefit of disabled prisoners.”

“It chose to ignore that ongoing improvements and innovations gave rise to a strong legal likelihood that the Defendants were not guilty of continued deliberate indifference or disability discrimination,” Jones wrote for the majority.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS: The advisory may need to be extended into Friday, however, there is some uncertainty due to the potential for a cooler easterly flow.

A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. If you don't have home air conditioning, continue to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for a few days after if your home is still hot. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Over the next hour and a half — with a side of cake, coffee and Day of the Dead-themed sugar skull lollipop rings — a group of mostly strangers broke one of life’s biggest taboos by talking openly about death.

They shared deeply personal stories of loved ones and peers they’ve lost, through unexpected tragedies and prolonged illnesses.

Tears were shed but they laughed a lot too, bonding over the grieving process, unresolved conflict with aging family members and feelings around their own mortality.

This strike has been looming for years because of two "legal" loopholes.

First, courts enforce "pattern bargaining". This means if a union is asking for something far outside what another similar union has already accepted, the union can be forced to accept the established "bargain".

Second, the MTA negotiates first with a union that is legally not permitted to strike under NY's Taylor Law, then demands "pattern bargaining" for other unions.

Obviously, forcing a workers organization to accept wages and conditions they do not want, on threat of fines or jail, is wildly immoral, but this is also just another reminder that this is a nation of slavers, not of the people.

HHS through @ASPRgov and @CDCgov is supporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus.
All 17 are currently en route via @StateDept airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers travelling in the plane's biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. One passenger currently has mild symptoms and another passenger tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus.
As of now, the airlift will transport passengers to the ASPR Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. Nebraska before taking the passenger with mild symptoms to a second RESPTC at its final destination.
