In sanctioning Albanese, the United States is violating U.N. rules that guarantee the immunity of the organization’s officials. But disregarding White House regulations is no joke, as several European banks know. According to the Italian press, in 2019 the Italian bank Unicredit agreed to pay $1.3 billion to the U.S. Treasury Department for conducting transactions with countries under embargo.

The decision by the White House has also been deemed illegal by 79 of the 125 countries that signed the Rome Statute, which established the ICC. Within the EU, three did not take a stand: Italy, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Gallo also cited a legal precedent: in 2002, a person whose assets were frozen by the U.S. challenged the situation before the European Court of Justice (ECJ). This is the famous Kadi case, named after Saudi citizen Yassin Abdullah Kadi, for whom a 2013 European ruling sided with him. The judges found that his right to due process and defense had been violated, since these measures were applied without prior trial. In other words, Francesca Albanese and the other individuals sanctioned by the U.S. could turn to European courts if the EU continues to do nothing.

After the debate, Vance revealed that he was deliberately lying: saying one thing that was not true (the pets) in the service of spreading even bigger lies (some general catastrophe). He essentially granted to an interviewer that the story about cats and dogs was not true, but “whatever the case may be,” it was legitimate to spread a lie because it drew attention to the general “carnage” in Springfield, of which of course there was none. Small lies are acceptable, for Vance, when they help build up a big lie. Vance’s stance might be summarized thus: “Where there is the smoke that I made up, then there must also be the fire that I also made up.” In other settings, Vance was more specific than “carnage,” claiming increased rates of disease and crime. All of these claims were also baseless and false.

Actually, the group is the Independent Women’s Forum. My friends at the Center for Media and Democracy have the real story on it. IWF “is an anti-feminist organization predominantly funded by right-wing foundations.” It has taken on issues like calling gun control “sexist,” trying to ban the teaching of global warming in America’s schools, opposing paid leave proposals in Covid legislation, etc.

IWF has received millions of dollars in funding from the Koch brothers, and many millions more from right-wing oligarchs: Coors Foundation, Bradley Foundation and Bradley Impact Fund, the Walton Family Foundation, and on and on.

A North Carolina immigration judge ordered the deportation of Levi Mendez-Maldonado, a 19-year-old Honduran immigrant who was murdered in 2024, even after his attorney informed the court of his death and provided police records documenting it. The judge ruled that he had failed to appear for his hearing and issued a removal order without mentioning his death in the decision, prompting criticism from immigration advocates who called the case an example of a dehumanizing and overly bureaucratic system. Mendez-Maldonado had been pursuing an asylum claim and had legal representation at the time of his death, while his homicide case remains unsolved.

What this office is doing is taking the parts of the federal government that touch you directly, your prescription, your voter registration, your passport, your federal login, out of the agencies that legally own them and rebuilding them on White House infrastructure. Vote.gov belongs to the Election Assistance Commission, and the studio built a copy. Passports belong to the State Department, and the studio is building a replacement this week. Login.gov belonged to GSA, and the studio’s guy runs it now.

For others still confined in immigration detention, the experiences remain horrific. Rodney Taylor, a double amputee detained at the Stewart Detention Center, has endured the systemic disregard for human life and dignity that defines ICE facilities. Taylor — who lost both legs as a child and relies on prosthetics, needs consistent access to medical care and accommodations to survive. In ICE custody, he has gone days without being able to properly charge his prosthetic legs, leaving him dependent on others for basic needs like food. He has also been forced to crawl on his hands to use showers reportedly covered in feces, mold, and bodily fluids. Denied adequate support and unable to use a wheelchair due to limited hand mobility, Taylor has at times been left without meaningful mobility for days.

But in recent weeks, the cemetery’s public website has scrubbed dozens of pages on gravesites and educational materials that include histories of prominent Black, Hispanic and female service members buried in the cemetery, along with educational material on dozens of Medal of Honor recipients and maps of prominent gravesites of Marine Corps veterans and other services.

Cemetery officials confirmed to Task & Purpose in 2025 that the pages were “unpublished” to meet recent orders by President Donald Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth targeting race and gender-related language and policies in the military.

Gone from public view are links to lists of dozens of “Notable Graves” at Arlington of women and Black and Hispanic service members who are buried in the cemetery. About a dozen other “Notable Graves” lists remain highlighted on the website, including lists of politicians, athletes and even foreign nationals.

The White House has told the Democratic Republic of Congo’s national soccer team to isolate for three weeks in Belgium before it can enter the United States to take part in this year’s World Cup, citing the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo.

In the end, that’s the Silicon Valley game: bullshit that is always full of historical inaccuracies and scientific impossibilities drowned out by great bravado; big talk that always skirts criticality because it's actually quite small-minded; bad ideas divorced from history and expertise, from any of the actual practices of real people in real places doing the real things that their tools are supposedly going to disrupt, upend, replace.

‘The 74’ was created by billionaires in 2015 to accelerate privatizing public education. Lately, wealthy people have been buying established media with excellent reputations. These acquired media of course do not exclusively concentrated on education like ‘The 74’ but they do cover it. Last November, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined Democrats for Education Reform (DEFR) President, Jorge Elorza, to write an opinion piece in multi-billionaire Jeff Bezos’s Washington Post. It promoted Trump’s new voucher program and on April 30th, ‘The 74’ carried an interview with Duncan also promoting that same legislation.

With average scores of well over 200 points, these drops are not large but do seem to indicate a problem. However, many people believe standardized testing is not actually useful for measuring learning because of the large amount of error inherent in education testing. The only known factor well correlated to NAEP outcomes is family income, the wealthier the family, the higher the score. Duncan’s claim that the latest NAEP testing results are “devastating” is laughable.

When I ask how Jane and Dana are doing, Sunderlin says not so great. You see, after forcing Dana to give birth, CPS opened up an investigation into the teen for being a young mother.

If/When/How was able to help the mother and daughter through yet another nightmare state investigation. But this kind of family policing is the point—and it’s what happens when the state is more invested in punishing abortion than protecting children.
