"We". A simple word, burdened with much responsibility. A country and its people, all different, all extraordinary, who have come so far and have a long, remarkable journey ahead. Today, I had fun celebrating this country at the best cookout ever. Thanks always, to the family Obama!
All of this, because of one man, his lovely wife, his fascinating family and a nigh-impossible dream that was realized. This is the American dream, albeit, one of many, woven into the tapestry of a young country. I look upon his words, which are literally all around me and see it:
I think on this day, 250 years of American independence and see the things that define us as citizens of this country. I see the young children and realize that at once, we are all living history in a once in a lifetime moment, on a one in a lifetime day.
I take in the sights and marvel at the sculptures, statues and artwork. I'm awestruck and return to the same entry point where I arrived. I'm with the people again, but we're dancing, cheering our elder women as they defy aging by jumping double dutch. This for us all, a real 4th of July!
A sense of peace washes over me, which in the moment, I find odd. My thoughts tell me that this is how life ought to be. For once, I see Chicago not as the segregated city of two sides, but as one city, one people, in a diverse garden, growing and thriving!
I've been in this neighborhood for decades, but kid me would never imagine what I saw with my adult eyes today. All races, all faces, in the hood, having fun!
I arrive and as if on cue, I hear "The Jeffersons (Movin’ on Up)" theme play. Naturally, I'm smiling and get dapped by a total stranger. I can feel the love!
Dear reader, I don't know what your plans were for the Semiquincentennial, but a former neighbor put the word out that I should pull up to his place for the cookout. His place:
