Lots of writers and scholars saw AI for what it is—a massive cheating and plagiarism machine—and didn’t use it all….
They call it “ideological capture,” (whatever that is), but it looks more like striving for accuracy and accounting for new research to me. The evidence about Columbus, BTW, comes mostly from his own writings….

Yes! It’s an excellent Texas tradition. In 1944 UT Austin protested the firing of the UT president. Over 8000 students marched from campus to the capitol building. One group of students carried a coffin laced “Academic Freedom.”
Alienated Majesty Books in Austin was packed for the conversation between David Grissom about his new book with Justin Miller of the Texas Observer. The conversation was great, and I enjoyed myself throughly!

So grateful to have heard the conversation between OAH President Annette Gordon-Reed and Secretary of the Smithsonian Lonnie Bunch III about public history during the nation’s 250th anniversary. They were brilliant about what’s at stake right now and what we can achieve through hope and dedication.
Researching at the Library of Congress today. This quotation from James Madison seemed to be speaking to today’s struggles.
It’s easy (and not inappropriate) to be cynical about this vision. But it lasted for decades and Nixon’s program note for the opening echoed Eisenhower’s (and of course Kennedy’s) vision. The KC is not a national theatre in the European sense, but in a way that reflects US democracy. 4/
A colleague recently said that as a scholar, his first impulse always, when confronted with a problem is to make a bibliography. We all laughed but it’s not a bad thing to do. Here’s a book that will help us all understand what’s happening in US higher education.
Far right, politically-appointed activist regents now control the curriculum on every University of Texas campus. Tens of thousands of students will now receive a subpar education. RIP a great state university.
When I was a kid I listened to this on Pete Seeger’s Dangerous Songs album and thought it was about the bad old days. Little did I know that as an adult it would speak to my life as a professor….

I think this is a good moment to share this passage by journalist Bill Moyers, an alumnus of UT Austin. I hope future students everywhere will some day see faculty across the US in the same way.
