I absolutely adored every minute of this book, this big messy story of middle aged punk grief, murder, alcoholism, old love, sexual chaos, TERRIBLE decisions, and the stubborn insistence that broken people still deserve to be loved.

I refuse to give anything away, but I was riveted by the plot: missing people, dead partners, old band drama, terrible coping mechanisms, and a group of people in their 40's and 50's trying to figure out whether redemption is still possible after everybody has already become a bit of a wreck.

From the first THWACK to the last scone, I was entirely enmeshed and rooting for our band of complicated friends to find their way through grief, redemption, self-care, and .. well, back to a life of joy.

There's something profoundly comforting about a story that tells you that you can be strange, grieving, difficult and carrying decades of damage, and people can still choose you anyway. This was a joy to read.

Finally read THE WASP FACTORY... intrigued by the FT calling it Gothic horror (i went in completely cold, but braced for it to be 1980s peak edgelord extreme-for-mainstream) but I can see why they called it that.
