Happy Birthday #SirPatrickStewart. Seen here as Lucius Aelius Sejanus in one of the greatest British TV drama series ever made. I Claudius 1976, based on the novels of Robert Graves.
Album and film .... Urgh! A Music War. Some great live performances captured on here.
Great choice. Rickman was an established stage actor before making his debut (both RSC and Broadway). Likewise, Sidney Greenstreet was an established stage actor when he debuted on screen at the age of 61, opposite Bogart in The Maltese Falcon (1941).
Da Vinci resided in Amboise, quite near the Kings chateau at Chambord. There is some evidence that the design of Chambord (including the double helix staircase, seen at the lower right of my photo) was influenced by Da Vinci's earlier designs. Well worth a visit if you are travelling Europe.
Visited Diocletian's Palace in Split just recently. Ironically (for a persecutor of Christians), he is not in the mausoleum and the site became more important for Christians.
Happy Canada Day to our friends across the pond. Our family is British, Scottish & Irish, with cousins across North America. Tower of Songs, Hommage à Leonard Cohen. 2017 Artists: El Mac (Miles MacGregor) and Gene Pendon. 1420 Rue Crescent, Montréal #CanadaDay
Gregory of Nin Statue with Bell Tower and Chapel of the Holy Arnir, and Diocletian's Palace. From a recent visit to Split, Croatia. #Diocletian #Croatia #Split #Statue #Architecture
Great night of reggae in Hull UK. ASWAD, followed by Maxi Priest, followed by UB40. All of their best hits through the evening. ‘Red, red wine, it goes to my head’ #Reggae #UB40 #ASWAD #MaxiPriest #Hull
Just been to the Pompidou in Malaga, which has great exhibits (Pollock, Twombly, Kline, Bourgeois, Nevelson, etc), but why oh why do these places always have acres of blank entrance walls? For goodness sake, hang some prints or drawings there!
Málaga, second most populous city in the Andalusia region of Spain. Great architecture from ancient to modern times. Have you been? #Spain #Malaga #Architecture
Brilliant songwriter and performer. One of the few left on my bucket list I have never managed to see live. This whole album is a classic, including 7 and a half minutes of 'Scenes From an Italian Restaurant'.
Brilliant. My parents had a Dansette and played Glen Miller, Herb Alpert, Joe Loss, etc. First thing I bought (when I was earning) was a big stereo stack system.
Lovely to see a bar with a bit of heritage. Wemyss certainly has that. Here’s the bar at the Cafe Continental in Gourock, just up the coast. 😎👍🏻
I discovered Johnson's 29 recorded songs through Eric Clapton's project to analyse and record the songs. Quite a few British musicians brought the great, early USA blues artists to international prominence, not least Clapton, Zeppelin, The Stones, John Mayall, etc.
Happy birthday to Sir Michael Palin(83) actor, comedian, writer, traveller and television presenter. I bet he has lost count of the number of times people have asked him if he wants ''the 5 minute argument, or the full half hour''. themichaelpalin.com
May 4th be with you all. Here's the body (Dave Prowse 1935-2020) and voice (James Earl Jones 1931-2024) actors for Darth Vader. DYK Prowse was a trainer for Christopher Reeve (in Superman) & Carey Elwes (in The Princess Bride), and was in Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange'. #StarWarsDay
Here’s the Poulnabrone (Poll na Bron) dolmen located in the Burren in County Clare, from a recent visit. Guess that would count for #StandingStoneSunday.
Love these old hammy sci-fi films. Absolute classics. Quick.... switch on the interrossitor.
The ideal home for the London gangster and his crew. Malcolm McDowell, 'Gangster Number 1' (2000) dir: Paul McGuigan.
A few people on here giving a shout for All Is Lost (2013), written and directed by J. C. Chandor, and held throughout by the great Robert Redford. Also, the great little thriller The Last Voyage (1960) with Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone, Edmund O'Brien, George Sanders, Woody Strode.
The Ford American V8 version of a 'woody'. 8 seater!
Just drove across the Burren in a little east to west road trip, while over from the UK. Amazing geology and natural landscape.
We visited Fairview Lawn Cemetery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a few years back. It's the final resting place for 150 Titanic victims, the largest number in the world. There is a "J. Dawson" Grave there. He was a 'coal trimmer' from Ireland (not the fictional 1997 film character).
BOTD. One of my favourite actors, Toshiro Mifune (三船 敏郎, Mifune Toshirō (1 April 1920 – 24 December 1997). Perhaps, best known in the west for the TV series Shogun (1980), Speilberg's 1941 (1979) and 16 Akira Kurosawa collaborations. Mifune as Kikuchiyo in Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954)
Seeing it in 1968, there were dozens of ‘blow your mind’ scenes in 2001 A Space Odyssey. It was so far ahead of its time. Dave Bowman makes contact with the monolith.
