As expected, Goodbye Lara’s first episode was fantastic. It’s always great to see an anime original that looks as impressive as this as it’s pretty rare nowadays. Stellar art direction all around but I was esp surprised by how unique the soundtrack was, it elevates so many already beautiful moments

I’m not that far in yet, but reading Magnitude Negative has been an interesting elucidation of Drakengard’s story. The game already does a good job with it’s characters but here you really get to understand the mental turmoil they go through in ways it’s source didn’t have a lot of room for.

12. Trigun Stargaze

This right here is PROOF that ANIME SUCKS ASS and I need to KILL MYSELF. Stargaze hurt me deeply and was also my drug for a month. Each week was spent thinking about its myriad of problems, my friend and I would have hour long conversations tearing into it, and yet we were so desperate for more. Studio Orange crafted the most terribly addictive show that spat in the face of all the care that was put into Stampede. It’s a disappointment that cuts deeper than any other sequel has, it misses the point of the entire cast and homogenizes them all into a confused mess with no clear direction. Vash doesnt grow from what happened at JuLai, he just gets over it. Vash doesn’t do fucking anything, he’s a complete shell of all of his former incarnations, his pacifism is reduced down to a refusal to act in any situation. Stargaze is more interested in writing awful Vashwood fanfic at the least appropriate times than actually tackling the main conflicts of those characters. Everything that Stampede sets up for Meryl’s character is abandoned so she can be a comic relief character with Milly. Scenes are halfhazardly pulled from Trimax and repurposed, devoid of any of the context that made them impactful in the first place. Knives claims to care about the plant’s independence and then has 0 reaction to the GNGs sacrificing them for his revival, he doesn’t react to anything man he’s hardly even written. The world that once felt vast and hopeless in Stampede feels tiny here, you rarely see new characters outside of those important to the plot and multiple episodes are spent wasting time and exploring nothing with any of these characters. The heart of Trigun has been ripped out and all that’s left are puppets of these characters parading around these vague messages of hope.

It hurt to watch, and yet I can’t even say I hated it. The experience I had watching this weekly was unlike anything I’ve had. This was a special time in my life, which is now split between pre-Stargaze and post-Stargaze ? I honest to god looked forward to every second of this train wreck. There’s a severe drought of anything good here, as anything that’s somewhat cool has to shoot every bone in it’s body until it cant crawl back into mediocrity. I genuinely think the Razlo fight is great, if you erase all the dialogue happening during it. The final episode didn’t even piss me off that much, my friend and I were actually sort of moved by it. Maybe it’s all stockholm syndrome but idk, I felt sad to see it go despite how much it infuriated us. I think back on the message Kenji Muto put out after Stampede finished. There was so much hope for the future of this project; plans we’ll never get to see come to light that wouldve undoubtedly felt like a proper continuation of this story—The more I think about it the more Stargaze’s existence feels like the bad ending, I so desperately wish that the same team woulve been able to work on it instead of Orange replacing them. Stampede is forever tainted by this now too. You can’t easily recommend an unfinished story to someone, the sequel is so horrible that it casts a shadow over all the great things its predecessor had accomplished.

I’m glad I got to witness this show as it aired and it was great to laugh at, but I will hold a grudge against Trigun Stargaze for the rest of time for killing a story I loved.

11. Gamera vs. Guiron

Dont got a lot to say on this one, it’s p much a rehash of Viras’s plot. This might be a slightly better movie than that was but the fatigue kicked in a lot earlier here for me. Guiron is AWESOME though, I’m a big fan of that guy and seeing a Gyaos variant get mutilated by it was crazy shit. Yea ok maybe I like this one more than Viras, (not having 10 minutes of runtime be reused footage from all the previous films helps) but it certainly doesnt top the insane decapitation sequence from Viras though—type of scenes that make you forget the rest of the movie sucks for just a minute or two.

10. Gamera vs. Viras

Writing this in retrospect after having seen all the Showa movies has me realizing that this is the movie where Gamera really started to fall off. Gyaos was already a bit of a letdown for me, and those issues unfortunately only worsen here. I respect some of the ideas being played with, but for the most part it sorta feels like a waste of time. Gamera vs Viras solidifies the formula for the rest of the series that I feel was the downfall for Showa Gamera. Aliens abduct a kid or two, hijinks ensues as Gamera is left to sit around half dead for most of the runtime. The main two boys here have a fun dynamic though, I actually find the addition of the american kid here charming even if it’s just to appeal to a distribution deal Daiei had at the time. There’s a couple of really sick shots throughout this and the final fight ends up paying off the buildup well, but it’s still the weakest film yet and unfortunately it only really goes downhill from here.
