First car I drove. Not actually this one. I don’t know that there are any photos of my actual one in electronic format. And it’s the first car I owned, I learned on a hodgepodge of cars and trucks owned by various relatives. Loved this car. But the windows did have a habit of exploding.

The governor of Mississippi referred to a black man holding public office as a “reign of terror.” This is straight up first Klan shit.

But the governor is urging the Mississippi Legislature to redraw its legislative, state supreme court and congressional lines before the 2027 elections, when state legislative seats will be on the ballot. He also vowed in a social media post on Wednesday morning that the state’s only Black congressman’s “reign of terror” will be “over” soon, referring to Democratic U.S. House Rep. Bennie Thompson.

It is especially striking when all of the justices who signed on to the opinion, including Alito himself, joined another opinion including this paragraph *the very same day.* This stated concern for ensuring that minority groups’ free association and ability to “influence policy” is forgotten.

Wait, so they want to protect only the richest from liability? This is like if there was a gilded age law against labor organizing, but only if the company was run by a Carnegie, duPont, or Rockefeller.

The bill would shield frontier AI developers from liability for “critical harms” caused by their frontier models as long as they did not intentionally or recklessly cause such an incident, and have published safety, security, and transparency reports on their website. It defines a frontier model as any AI model trained using more than $100 million in computational costs, which likely could apply to America’s largest AI labs, like OpenAI, Google, xAI, Anthropic, and Meta.

I think it is right and good for them to call for it. The problem we now see with section 4 of the 25th am, though, is that there is one specific person who has to be on board: the Vice President. So, is JD Vance capable of (even self-serving) acts of political courage to stop a genocide?

The first paragraph of Section 4 of the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution:

“Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.”

Remember when the Washington Poat seemed like it might be an example of a part of the mainstream media where things could be done right sometimes? Let us all remember you can never trust a billionaire to do anything but serve their own wealth and ego. Certainly nothing like the public good.

Oh, if you told them, I am sure they will be careful. The parties to this conflict have definitely proven themselves to care deeply about international law.

In a statement last week, UNESCO said “cultural property is protected under international law.” It said it had contacted all parties in the Iran conflict and shared the geographical coordinates for sites on its world heritage list, as well as for national symbols. The hope was that they might be spared.

Yes! Apart from the very limited circumstance of immediate self-defense, yes the president very much does need to do that. Maybe Congress calls what they give him an AUMF rather than a declaration of war, but the president does not get to go around the world punching people in the nose sua sponte.

Well, at least there are some stated objectives. Trump will come out and contradict them in 20 minutes, but I guess we are calling these the objectives for now. 1) ok, I guess. Seems like if we could do that with just dropping bombs, we would have by now, but I get why we would want that.
