Cork University Press has been publishing in Irish Studies since 1925
Today we remember Nell McCafferty on the 2nd anniversary of her death. In 1985 she signed an agreement with Attic Press, the feminist publisher, to write a book on the infamous Kerry babies case. ♀️ A Woman to Blame is a searing depiction of "a witch trial" in modern Irish history.📚
We’re delighted to see Cathal Póirtéir’s review of 'Glór ón Sceilg: Scríbhinní le Mícheál Ua Ciarmhaic' published today by @booksireland.bsky.social . Póirtéir describes the collection as “a feast of traditional life and lore”. Read the full review: bit.ly/3UElkQw

Thank you to Neslihan Şenocak for her detailed review of 'Mendicants on the Margins' in the Journal of Medieval Monastic Studies. Şenocak says that the book is "an excellent contribution to" the topic of mendicant friars, and is "very well researched". The book is available at bit.ly/4pxjNXW
Born in Co. Armagh, William McCrum was a goalie and member of the Irish Football Association. Although originally rejected for lacking sportsmanship, his motion was accepted in 1891. If you want to read more about McCrum and other Irish sport, keep your eyes peeled for the ‘Atlas of Irish Sport’.
He notes that the volume is “the product of decades of archival work, linguistic expertise, cartographic recovery, genealogical reconstruction and historical interpretation." The book is available from our website and all good bookshops. Learn more at bit.ly/4eXlCd8 .
The 'Atlas of Irish Sport' is an upcoming landmark publication for readers interested in sports history and the history of Ireland and its people. It will be released on 11 September 2026 and can be pre-ordered on the CUP website bit.ly/4f299DM Thank you to our endorsers for their comments.
📚We recently celebrated the launch of ‘Dánfhocail: Irish epigrams in verse’ in Cork and Belfast. In Cork, Professor Alan Titley MRIA provided a fascinating insight into the “bits and shards [...] of wisdom” of the old Irish epigrams which are published with English translations for the first time.
“Folklore’s age of innoncence […] is coming to an end” declares Stiofán Ó Cadhla, author of the newly published ‘Inventing Irish Folklore’, which offers a retrospect of the keywords and worlds of Irish folklore/béaloideas. Read more about it at bit.ly/4ewFQcf
Did you know that “dánfhocail” is a word invented and adapted by T.F. O’Rahilly to translate the word “epigram”? Listen to an episode of the Pat Kenny Show, where Dr Ken Ó Donnchú – co-translator of ‘Dánfhocail: Irish epigrams in verse’ – discusses Irish sayings dating back centuries bit.ly/3S2PKef
