Sports negotiations differ in some ways from negotiations in other spaces, as Colvin points out.

Alexander Colvin, Dean of the Cornell University ILR School, says: “The big thing is it’s the whole industry in a way negotiating as one [when it comes to sports negotations]. The league, the collection of clubs, are negotiating together with all the players. They’re setting the rules for their industry, which is unusual. Sports is definitely an area where timing can be really critical, because of the nature of the season. If you can reach an agreement earlier, that actually can often be better, [as it] shows signs of relatively good labor relations. But the reality is the time pressure creates an incentive to reach a deal.”

Research from Charlie Townsend (#CornellILR Future of Work fellow) found that men + women achieve similar economic outcomes in negotiations but female negotiators foster stronger interpersonal relationships, leading to greater satisfaction with the result + ⬆️ desire to negotiate again in the future.

Charlotte "Charlie" Townsend, a postdoctoral associate at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “So much of negotiation research has really focused on men’s advantages. But if women are creating better relationship outcomes in negotiations, it makes a lot of sense that their partners would like to negotiate with them more than with men. We don’t talk enough about the social consequences in negotiations, and the importance of how your partner makes you feel. It’s really about building relationships with people.”

Scheinman ’75, MS ’76, Professor of Conflict Resolution at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “The impact of AI on jobs is a central issue facing our economy, and it is vital that we address how workers in New York can both be protected from the downsides and share in the benefits of this rapid wave of technological change at work. There is a lot of fear of the unknown surrounding AI and how it will affect workers, but just as the industrial revolution shifted jobs from the farm to the factory, jobs won’t necessarily go away, but they will shift.”

The high willingness to listen may stem from basic curiosity and a desire to clarify one’s thinking about an issue. Such interaction won’t impart new information, but listening to someone with whom one feels common ground could be helpful in processing information and thinking through issues.

Michèle Belot, professor of economics at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “Willingness to engage with different views on controversial subjects is actually quite high. The question is whether people are then willing to engage with what they hear. Promoting common values is not a miracle cure, but our evidence indicates people being more willing to reconsider their views if they know the other person shares common values.”

“There’s a lot more we can do to emphasize things we have in common, even if we disagree strongly on topic. It’s always good to remember when we listen to others who seem to be thinking very differently that there’s probably a ton of things we still agree on, and sometimes that gets lost.”

Alice Lee, assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Cornell University ILR School, is part of a research study that found that people who applied to narrower pay ranges then negotiated less assertively. Lee says: “If women are sorting into jobs with narrow pay ranges, that is then constraining their likelihood to negotiate assertively for a higher salary—and these policies [like pay transparency laws] that are intended to mitigate these gaps might be actually perpetuating these gaps.”

With businesses increasingly asked to take stands on political and social issues, the researchers said, the findings imply that they must consider positions taken long before any existing leadership was in place, and how today’s actions might be seen years down the road.

Brian Lucas, associate professor of organizational behavior at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “If 60 years have gone by, you might think people would understand that organizations change and adapt over time, or they might attribute hypocrisy to an individual who is no longer there. But we find that these hypocrisy effects linger and we see inconsistency penalties over these longer periods of time.” He adds: “Despite some cynicism around organizations’ motives, most people within them want to behave ethically and consistently – and [companies] don’t want to be labeled as hypocrites.”

Merrick Osborne, assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “Managers don’t always ask ‘how are my decisions about who’s hired and who’s fired situated in a broader social context?’ Decisions are not just influenced by the information directly in front of us. Societal influences and pressures seep into the thought process, ultimately generating biases that shape decision-making.” A lack of attention to intersectionality can “sometimes result in initiatives failing large portions of the groups they are purportedly designed to help.”

As LA and Oakland teachers approach potential strikes amid other contract battles in CA, experts say the disputes could signal a new phase in public-sector union strategy—leveraging coordinated timing/political pressure to reshape pay, staffing + school funding debates. #CornellILR's Lee Adler says:

Lee Adler, visiting lecturer at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “Presently there is an odd confluence politically in California, as unions are mostly unified in seeking a one-time billionaires tax state wide, but the governor and some of his legislative allies oppose that tax and it will make for a muddy picture for the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) as often their needs/demands take into account legislative support. I do not think that the recent San Francisco strike will influence the UTLA as they will be driven by their sense of the political winds in LA, as well as their assessment how well/bad off California might fiscally be. It would seem that the parents would rather not see a strike. But if citizens are well educated about the strike's necessities, there is a chance that parents will support the teachers again.”

Emily Zitek, who teaches sports psychology at the Cornell University ILR School, says: “Decades of sport psychology research points to the importance of confidence. Performance accomplishments predict confidence, as does verbal praise like external validation. The key thing would be to not have his confidence in landing it waver before he starts his routine. That would make it really hard for him to land it. Ilia Malinin likely has a lot of confidence from landing a quadruple axel in practice, presumably many times. We tend to look at the monetary amount of the fine and say, ‘Oh well, that’s the cost of doing business,’ but if we also take into account these effects on human capital, which are often harder to observe but which our evidence suggests are happening, that's a significant additional cost.”
