This line is a lot more somber and practical with the full quote. One thing that has struck me on previous reads is how many of the characters feel like they're on the edge of failure for most of the story, or feel they have already failed, but keep pushing forward and doing their best anyway.

"I wish it need not have happened in my time,' said Frodo.

times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us. And already, Frodo, our time is beginning to look black.
