on abroad

In the second panel, in a steamy restaurant, Emily sits next to her friend Onsta, as they both eat meat off of skewers. Emily melts as she chews, saying “oh my godddddd onsta this meat is so GOOD” to which Onsta replies, “I know, I know!” The narration continues, “I don’t think I have much to say that’s all that novel.”

In the third panel, Emily and her parents stand by a display case in the Nintendo Museum. She excitedly points to a floppy disc in the case, labeled “Time Twist for the Famicom Disk System,” as she says to her parents, “omg omg mom, dad, look at this!” Her parents look entertained if a little chagrined and are labeled “have been listening to me infodump this whole trip.” The narration continue, “I had fun. I’m glad to have spent this time with my parents too.”

In the fourth panel, Emily looks out the window of an airplane at the wing of the aircraft and the Haneda airport. She smiles softly, and is labeled “person who’s about to get zero sleep on a 12 hr flight.” The narration concludes, “it doesn’t have to be much more than that, I think.”

But I couldn’t get this one out of my head, and I’ve been in a really horrible depressive spiral, so, here we are. It may sound like an exaggeration to say this movie has saved my life, and I am a person who adamantly abides by the idea that art is a tool in a tool box with which you save your own life, a transformative process, though ups to John Darnielle’s take on his song This Year for really beating that one into me, but in a time where my hopelessness really feels like it’s at a high that is hard to quantify, this movie is a welcome salve, a reminder that hope is real and true despite the myriad of forces that say otherwise, the fucking daily cacophony that says individualism will be our demise and our only road. Here is a story of two beings coming together to save the worlds they love and each other. A story of deciding to be brave deep down when every atom in your body wants to give into despair, DOES give into despair but then picks itself back up. Here is a movie that says that is worth something. So yes, I am the one deciding to stay alive, to keep moving and keep trying, but the art helps, gives it a new foundation or maybe just patches up one that’s in desperate need of repair. Bravery is not a gene. You just need someone to be brave for. I will be brave for all of the people I love. And for myself. I know the kind of person I am.”

In the fourth panel, we cut back to Emily, now with a sweatshirt drapes over her shoulders, curled up in the theater seat, and crying while smiling. The narration concludes, “for you. For all of us.”

on myth

A series of four panel comics. In the first panel, Emily stands with her hands on her hips, glowing with sparkles radiating from her. The narration begins: “I felt like I did a pretty good job at keeping myself afloat this winter.” Emily says a quiet “haha yaaaay.”

In the second panel, a large sphere looms over Emily, casting a shadow. The narration continues, “and as if to prove me wrong, seasonal depression walloped intimate this month, the with haphazard turn of the season.” Emily gives another quiet “haha yaaay.”

In the third panel, Emily attempts to pull herself out from under the sphere which is now on top of her. The narration continues, “(or, maybe just normal depression? Eh, the details aren’t important.)” Emily, from under the rock, lets out a feeble “haha yaaay.”

In the fourth panel, we see repeated frames of a figure pushing a rock up a hill, repeating more and more and getting smaller and smaller down the panel. The narration continues, “I’ve written so much about these waves, these highs and lows, and I’ve certainly used this imagery before, this allusion to Greek myth—“

Another set of four panels. In the first panel, we see a hand crossing a date off a March 2026 calendar. The narration reads, “one must, I suppose, imagine Sisyphus happy, still trying even when he fails again and again.”

In the second panel, Emily stands on a street corner, bundled up in a coat and greeting a friend, who leans against a phone poll. The narration continues “how Sisyphus makes an effort to be present with the people important to him.”

In the third panel, Emily tromps on the treadmill, anime music blaring in the background. The narration continues, “how Sisyphus does the work, the self care even when it’s hard, the toolbox overflowing with skills.”

In the fourth panel, Emily sits at her desk talking at her laptop, looking tired and stressed. The narration continues, “imagine Sisyphus telling his therapist about the anger, the fury at the injustices of the world, the rage bundled up in his chest unable to even just budge the rock.”

Another set of four panels. In the first two panels, hands push against a large bolder, the bolder being as wide as two panels. The narration reads, “but imagine—no, remember—that Sisyphus was alone.” In the third panel, we see the rock and the sky above it, and a lasso flying through the air. In the fourth panel, we see Emily peeking out from the side of the rock, wiping her forehead of sweat and reacting in shock.

One final, full page panel. We zoom out and see Emily pushing the rock, now lassoed around its middle and being pulled by a sequence of friends further up the hill. Together, they make progress. The narration concludes: “but I’m not.”

It’s time to join Cool Teen Mothman on a most important adventure: getting a birthday gift for Mothmama!

A comic in black, white and screentone, titled “Cool Teen Mothman buys a Present.” In the first panel, Cool Teen Morhman, a bean with scrawny legs, wings, big eyes and a baseball cap turned backwards, trots down a field following a sign that reads “this way to the market.” In the second panel, CTM holds a calendar and looks panicked. The narration reads “uh oh! It’s Mothmama’s birthday tomorrow!” In the third panel, CTM stands in the market, surrounded by booths. The narration continues: “maybe some of Cool Teen Mothman’s friends can help?”

Four more panels. In the first panel, CTM talks to the Lake Erie Monster, a Nessie looking creature, who holds out a hand made plushie, which CTM looks interested in. The narration reads, “this seems more like cool teen mothman’s thing.” In the second panel, CTM talks to the Tsuchinoko, who holds out a necklace. The narration continues, “Mothmama already has a necklace.” In the third panel, CTM talks to the Fresno Nightcrawler about a hat. The narration reads “has mothmama ever worn a hat?” In the fourth panel, CTM talks to Bigfoot, who holds out a candle. CTM wildly waves his wings in distress. The narration reads “definitely not that!”

Four more panels. In the first, CTM ponders. In the second, he has an idea and lights up! In the third panel, he asks Ms. Flatwoods for some markers and paper. In the fourth panel, he runs back home, paper in hand.

Three final panels. In the first panel, CTM runs into the room where Mothmama is. In the second panel, he hands Mothmama the paper. In the third panel, Mothmama gives him a big hug, saying “oh my little love bug, it’s perfect!”
