great day as a fan of tiny books by horror authors with funny pseudonyms and good gimmicks: picked up the new Sesuji--which I'm assuming is a spiritual follow-up to The Mouths given its size--and a recent Nashi that's in the form of a student handbook that's been scribbled on
when I'm president (it'll happen I'm pretty sure) my first executive order will be everyone in the world MUST pretend to be surprised that I'm into Man Ray's movies
very pro the cool screens that flash when you choose a character in Yume no Owari ni
so it takes all of eight seconds for Saburo Jinguji 6 to establish that the vibes are Different this time
Saburo alone, cig dangling loose from the mouth after confirming the body of guy he questioned earlier who "wanted to be just like you". "Just like me, huh..." I got problems with Saburo Jinguji 5's aesthetic presentation but MAN is it locking the hell into the noir sadness
Getting tomorrow's post ready and what the--how we already got 600 members?? Wasn't I just celebrating 500 a few months ago!?!? Baffling. Too big a number. Thank you so much as always to everyone who humors my nonsense!
got a post coming tomorrow where I crack open da Egg (aka try and fail to explain my Yukihiko Tsutsumi obsession)
going through an ish of COM and stumbled on the world's most specific Lupin x Shotaro's Fantasy World Jun crossover parody
the sound effect that plays for dialogue in Saburo Jinguji 5 certainly is a choice for a hard-boiled noir game......
I am the world's greatest detective (or I'm just good at no-lifing games)....either way, Saburo Jinguji 4 DONE The first in the series I'd call unequivocally good as hell! Beautifully links its story, themes and structure together into a very heartfelt, kind mystery
third Saburo Jinguji game finished and uhoh, they're adding some sugar to that bitter coffee & cigarettes taste...I'm actually falling for my precious lil detective duo here
Garm Wars...the only real movie?? cyclical sci-fi proper noun assault about finding god that gains a doubly profound metatextual layer if you do your oshii homework -- it's like the grand thematic unifier, the ultimate brainworm giver also is allowed to just like, look like that
Egg so deeply gets it. Hm? What's that? What's 'it'? You know...(gestures vaguely towards the moon)...It!!
banging a pan with my ladle: alright kids food's here, we got cute Takashi Yanase (Anpanman) comics scanned straight from COM mag, time to eat!
Saburo Jinguji 2 done and dusted and I'm happy to report the wrinkled, balding middle aged men quota was MET
it has come to my attention that my precious child Utopiano has finally been blessed with a rating average on letterboxd 🙏 got an extremely powerful curve on it
The Sesuji blessing strikes again! Kuchi ni Kansuru Anketo is some of the best horror Takashi Shimizu has directed since like, the early 00s. I got chills! More than once!!
new Junji Ito anthology show has started! First ep is directed by Yuta Shimotsu (Best Wishes to All, New Group) and it's.....not bad! Clearly has directing chops behind it and enjoys some CLASS sound work even if it also bumps up against the greatest monster of all, ~the japanese tv camera~
detouring from Ryoko Yamagishi's Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi to read....some Ryoko Yamagishi's horror shorts This stuff is so elegant -- deeply modern feeling nightmares both interior and distanced, defined less by the dark and more by her overwhelming use of white. She fast-tracking to GOAT status
put it off for years but I'm FINALLY digging into Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi! Slow reading bc of all the ancient Japanese names thrown out, but this a straight 11/10 so far setting aside the bottomless ocean of gender going on, the occult flavor here...most delicious dish I could ever ask for
once again thinking of that Kawazu quote "originally games were putting a knife into the flank of reality"
first Saburo Jinguji--sorry, I mean Mr. Jake Hunter--game done! tons of cool ideas, evocative and honest, all wrapped up in an experience vaguely hellish to actually play that's what we call certified baxter gaming 😌
man the first Saburo Jinguji is such an incredible game if you wanna see some GUYS
