Woah! @zotero.org version 9 now has a 'read aloud' feature, where an artificial voice can read articles to you. The premium voices option is actually pretty decent. I can imagine myself using this to listen to articles on the tram in to work.
As a belated contribution to promoting our new paper about animal calls, here's one of my all-time favourite animal vocalists: the magpie ♥️ This one was particularly friendly and had seemingly learned to sing to people at the camp ground in exchange for sandwich crumbs.
Very cool. Although the figure immediately brought to mind this beauty:
For-profit academic publishing companies: We add value to make science better 🙏🏻 😤 Also for-profit academic publishing companies: Hmm, you tried to access some academic articles. Seems suspicious. You're blocked! 🚫 🙅
Saw both of those things myself back in May last year—incredible places! Can't wait to go back one day. (NZ fur seal; kākā; bathing beach near Oban; Albatross colony in Dunedin)
I've just started using bases (great feature!). I wish in the view selector you could organise the views into folders, perhaps by dragging a view onto another. E.g., in the screenshot, I wish I could collapse all the 'ingredient' views into one folder
Sad to hear that Emma Johnston (@unimelb.bsky.social vice-chancellor) has unexpectedly passed away. I don't have much experience with her, but this quote shared from Kristen Pammer (our Head of School) describes a sustainable "leading from the edges" leadership we need more of at our universities.

Great set from @kiasmos.music-social.com here in Auckland last night! 🫨
Read it! It's not short but it's important. It's about why running our universities like corporations is killing them. Quentin goes beyond the usual complaints and really lays out the institutional dynamics that make universities and corporate managerialism incompatible.

Recorded some nice thunderstorm sounds last night here in Auckland. ⛈️
I should try more of his recipes. This is my 18th loaf of his 'big dog boule' recipe which always turns out great. Photo of my last loaf below next to a Coconut Iced Boston Bun
Solid Monday night: ate some great pizza and designed a beer-label for my friend who is home-brewing this weekend ✅
Made a batch of Hetty McKinnon's Gok Jai (Vegetable Crystal Dumplings) 😋
What I was drinking (a lot of) here in New Zealand on election Day back in November
Had a nice little spike of ~6,000 people from Reddit come check out my citizen science experiment over the weekend! 🙏🏻 Just redid the test myself and scored better than 100% of people in music intuitions (but only better than 72% for colour). Test yourself here - www.themusiclab.org/quizzes/tone...
Fun seeing how my own word associations relate to others in the Small World of Words project (smallworldofwords.org/en) — cool citizen science project! Also glad I wasn't the only one who wrote 'kaiyote' in response to the prompt 'hiatus' 🤣 (Hiatus Kaiyote is a band, for those who don't know...)
