I have a couple friends or always urging me to stop at the underpainting of some of my paintings. I never do, but sometimes I’m really tempted.
color study for "black candle" painting (8 inch x 10in). I don't do color studies for every painting I do, but when the finished painting will be 5 foot high, I like to have some sense of where I'm headed because of the amount (and color) of paint I will be using...

a 1963 Silvertone electric guitar. The so-called "Chris Isaak" model. A great rockabilly guitar.
early 1940s Cavanagh 400 line panama hat. It's rare to find old panamas in good condition. This straw is still supple and it's one of my favorite summer hats.
Although most of my paintings lean hard into the surreal, I sketch a great deal outdoors. Mostly in pastels. It helps me to reset my color sense occasionally. This is a pastel drawing of Federal Street in Salem 24" x 36" chalk pastels.
