Mushroom photographer by day, crisis, de-escalation, and independent living specialist by night. Twin Cities Minnesotan now, but I'm mean because I grew up in New England. 🇵🇸
I went out looking for apples in our neighborhood natural area yesterday. Ended up filling my backpack with wild apples for cider (yielded 3L!) and was treated to this monarch butterfly having a snack.
I'll be at my first craft market in years next week-- www.bethel-mpls.org/resistancere... . I'm bringing a bunch of new stuff and a bunch of old stuff. It should be a lot of fun, come say hi!
Fruit report from the (farthest) east side. I saw green plums yesterday, which is *very* exciting, I didn't find any at all last year after the eritd weather killed flowers early. Local orchard-cum-park is full of green apples, too! I'm looking forward to fall.
In my garden it seems that disturbing the ground is the easiest way to end up with new native plants. This Allegheny monkey flower will be shifted out of the patio-to-be to where my water pepper and swamp milkweed live.
Out walking the dog before it's too hot. It's a constant trade off between making sure the dog doesn't start finding her own ways to stay busy in the house (trying to herd or trick me outside, throwing every sneaker in the house at me, etc) and not accidentally killing her through heat stroke.
Truly a beautiful night in east Saint Paul/Southwest Maplewood/the forgotten triangle.
I have found you one wild strawberry amongst the eighty billion mock strawberries I keep seeing 🍓.
Per my youngest: "Feel free to post that on Bluesky or something." Me: "Would you like me to?" Youngest: "Yes, more people need to know about my joy and whimsy."
Hot stick Saturday! From my walk yesterday, a tiny crown tipped coral mushroom peeking out of a dead stick. #fungifriends
Spotted this tiny bolete out of the corner of my eye, it looked so perfect that I thought for a minute it might be fake. #fungifriends
Last night I had the privilege of actually *hearing* my yard's resident ruby throated hummingbirds! Even better, I was able to confirm it with Merlin. 😁 I've only ever heard their wings, not their calls, so I remain delighted.
Phenomenal show by @thelastdinnerparty.bsky.social last night at the Palace Theater. I've never seen a band work this hard on stage, just phenomenal.
I made this for my youngest, who is a Bill Wurtz superfan. This is from the video Wurtz made for the song "Money."
Good morning from the trail. I'm posting this goatsbeard (tragopogon pratensis) because every year I have to relearn what makes it different from yellow salsify (tragopogon dubius). Goatsbeard doesn't have the green petals radiating below the yellow ones, and has more petals.
If you are the person in my neighborhood feeding the local wildlife, please stop. I assure you, they're getting plenty of food from everyone's gardens and bird feeders 🙄
For my #fungifriends, some turkey tail mushrooms. Mushroom season seems a little late kicking off in my microclimate area, although I've seen a few pheasant back and amber jelly so far.
Out before the storms today, honeysuckle is in bloom and smells wonderful.
I have one! I got it from the Friends Plant sale in 2023! First photo is 2023, second is the end of last summer. I baby mine and overwinter it in the basement, but I do plan on putting it in the ground this year.
Third year for my Currant bush, it just keeps getting bigger and better! Does anyone know if I can move these volunteer strawberries? I'm willing to give up the fruit this year to establish them in a better spot-- they're on the path between my raised beds.
Given the recent discussion about Minnehaha I thought I'd promote my local dog park, Battle Creek in Maplewood. It's big, it's fully fenced, and generally a nice crowd here. Dog owners maintain the park on a volunteer basis. More info below 😁
