Crisis
@crisis-uk
The national charity for people experiencing homelessness in Britain. We help individuals out of homelessness, and campaign for the changes needed to solve it altogether. www.crisis.org.uk
Last year, over 300,000 homes in England were classed as "long-term" empty. Our Head of Policy & Campaigns, Jasmine Basran, spoke to BBC Three Counties Radio about how bringing empty homes back into use can help address the housing crisis and record levels of homelessness across the country.

We welcome Angela Rayner back as Housing Secretary. Angela has secured a commitment of £39 billion for social & affordable homes & is focussed on tackling the housing crisis. We will work with Angela on the PM’s pledge to end rough sleeping & deliver more social & council homes.
Just minutes into his new job as PM, Andy Burnham made tackling homelessness a priority, pledging to end rough sleeping in his first speech. That's hugely positive for our prospects of ending homelessness. We stand ready to support every step of the way.

Local Housing Allowance has been subject to freezes & cuts since 2012. Since 2024 it's been frozen solid. Now, fewer than 2% of rental homes are covered by housing benefits & families are forced into homelessness by a system intended to protect them. www.crisis.org.uk/media/00pnzl...
Huge thanks @specsaversuk.bsky.social for funding a transformation of our Crisis Edinburgh Skylight garden! 🪴 Very nearly finished, the garden will provide a peaceful space where Crisis members can relax, connect with others, and access our vital support and services.
For too long, housing benefit has not kept pace with soaring rents. This is driving record numbers of people into homelessness as they're priced out of their homes. The government must unfreeze housing benefit urgently so it covers the true cost of renting. Everyone needs a home.
Millions of us are affected by the housing emergency. You never know what someone is going through. Be kind.
The Vagrancy Act has been scrapped. But how did a law that criminalised homelessness survive for more than 200 years? Watch to learn more about the Act, the campaign to scrap it and how Crisis supporters, alongside a coalition of organisations and campaigners, helped make this change possible▶️
🚨 Breaking news: from today, it's no longer a crime to sleep rough in England and Wales. The Vagrancy Act has finally been repealed. For more than 200 years, this archaic law criminalised people for sleeping rough or begging. But no more.
Football is about more than the final score. Having a safe, stable home gives people the foundation to rebuild their lives and return to the things they love. This World Cup, we're celebrating the role that sport can play in helping people feel part of something again.
.@mattdownie.bsky.social spoke to Andrew Marr yesterday about the heatwave endangering people sleeping rough. Councils must activate their severe weather protocols & bring people out of the heat. If you’re concerned about someone, contact https://thestreetlink.org.uk/. In an emergency call 999.
It can’t go on like this, can it? It can. But it doesn’t have to. By; 👉building more social homes, 👉fixing the welfare system, 👉and ensuring proper support systems are in place, homelessness can be ended for good. Data source: England Homeless Monitor 2025, Crisis UK
Temperatures will hit record highs this week. We’re urging local authorities to activate severe weather plans and protect people from extreme heat. Look out for one another. Report concerns via Streetlink (England & Wales) or Simon Community (Scotland). Call 999 in an emergency.
In the UK, people from the LGBTQ+ community are more at risk of homelessness than the general population. Unfortunately, discrimination still prevents people from having a safe and stable place to live. Nobody should be kicked out for coming out. Everyone needs a home.
