What could we do with 900 of Elon Musk’s 1,000 billion dollars?

With 900 billion dollars, the U.S. could make very large, measurable progress on several major social problems, and in a few cases it could plausibly eliminate them outright if the money were spent well. The biggest candidates are homelessness, medical debt, and parts of the affordable housing crisis because the scale of need is large but still far below 900 billion dollars in annual or one-time terms.

Problems that 900 billion could tackle

Homelessness. One estimate says ending homelessness in the U.S. could cost roughly 11 billion to 30 billion per year, while HUD-linked discussions have also cited about 20 billion as a figure to end homelessness, so 900 billion is far beyond that scale.

Medical debt. U.S. residents owed at leas. billion in medical debt at the end of 2021, so 900 billion could wipe out that debt and still leave substantial room for prevention and access reforms.

Affordable housing. The U.S. has a major shortage of affordable homes, with research suggesting a gap of millions of units; 900 billion could fund huge housing construction, subsidies, and rental support, though it would not tully solve land-use and income problems by itself.

Student debt. Total student debt is about 1.75 trillion, so 900 billion could cancel roughly half of it, depending on how the money were targeted.

Hunger and basic income support. A sum that large could dramatically expand nutrition assistance or even fund temporary cash-transfer programs at a national scale, though the exact reach depends on program design.

Best uses

A smart way to use 900 billion would be a mix of direct relief and structural fixes: housing vouchers and supportive housing, medical debt cancellation plus insurance reforms, childcare and early education, and workforce supports. That approach matters because some problems are mostly about funding, while others are also about policy bottlenecks like zoning, wages, health coverage, and tuition costs.

What it would not fully solve

900 billion would not permanently solve wage inequality, racism, climate change, or voting-rights conflicts on its own, because those are deep structural and political problems rather than single-budget problems. But it could still reduce the harm they cause by funding housing, health, education, and community stability at a very large scale.

A useful way to think about it is: 900 billion is enough to erase some problems directly and to materially shrink several others, but only if paired with policy changes that keep the same problems from returning.

I've been tinkering around in Terminal on my Mac the last few days, and I think I've finally gotten things configured the way I want. Specifically I've been working on getting syntax highlighting up and running, and getting all the colors the way I want them to be. I'm satisfied with the results.

You already know I think a lot about line and geometry. I apply this to my street and architectural photography, but I also think about it when it comes to the human body. There are a number of lines that stand out to me in this picture. I hope you won't mind that I've drawn them on to you.
