Australian girl in Canada. Left handed, Maths teacher, atheist Jew, Lego fan, geocacher. I believe in public education and that we should all be outdoors a lot. Like right now. (They call that 'touching grass') 2+2=4
Within 1 second of me replacing fresh sugar water in the feeder, my little guardian was back making sure no one else was going to steal their stash.
I just finished @add-hawk.bsky.social ‘s excellent and comprehensive book The Score. Lots of anecdotes and personal stories mixed in with some very insightful observations and an interesting extended metaphor using the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse. Definitely worthwhile.
Oh and they’re very wet but I snapped chickadees on the other feeder earlier.
“Be patient” said the lady in the store when I bought this hummingbird feeder yesterday. “It takes some while for the neighbourhood hummingbirds to find new feeders.”
I got the obligatory photo through bars in the fence keeping us off the crumbling walkway because our city does not put enough money into infrastructure. How embarrassing. #vancouver #notreallyaworldclasscity
This is a must read book for all parents and teachers. The author @jonathanhaidt.bsky.social has extensive research for his arguments. It is alarming, but awareness is important.
Be the sort of teacher that gets cards like this at the end of the semester. Remember always: they never remember what you teach them but they do remember how you make them feel. #bestjobintheworld
Not only am I not American and I do not observe Juneteenth, if I was and did, I would not recognise such an important day by shopping for watch bands, WizeBand. This is kind of gross.
The final projects have started coming in. First up, the misanthropists.
One of my students observed how perpetually tired I am. For my birthday, he bought me a portable espresso machine. It’s awesome.
Jr Fish is once more back home from university for the summer. I came home from a long day at work yesterday to dinner and clean home. This is the closest I am ever going to get to knowing what it’s like to have a wife.
Imagine how much better our public schools could be - and all the things we could offer our students - if the students who went to these private $$$ schools could start at public schools and not just transfer after they fail there.
I teach Statistics 12 which takes them all the way to confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, similar to an intro course in university. I’m always on the lookout for good (non American) data sets! 🙌
