To make this plain and personal, a substantial portion of my personality in my teens was "redneck". Nothing in school or social groups opposed that character. I was liberal due to my parents influence, but I was as susceptible to Confederacy apologist propaganda as anyone.
This is much better prose than I expected from a history book. History writers often get too into minutiae and forget they're telling a story. Not here, thankfully.
