BlueSky is great for picking up book recommendations, but we are going to need more book shelves (which isn’t a bad thing). Our copy of A Peculiar Effect On The BBC arrived today, the perfect distraction for a Monday. #APeculiarEffectOnTheBBC #DrWho #Quatermass

The text reads:

"It was an exciting period and Jack and I were there from the beginning. We were there when Television Centre was still only a rubbish dump and Lime Grove was as famous as Hollywood. We were the first designers to work at Ealing Studios and were certainly the first effects men ever to be employed in British television."
Bernard Wilkie was a pioneer in the world of visual effects.
Along with Jack Kine he co-founded the BBC's Visual Effects
Department in 1954. Between them, they worked on too many BBC productions to list, but they included Doctor Who, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Quatermass, Monty Python's Flying Circus and Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.
A Peculiar Effect on the BBC is his memoir, looking back over his career in detail with a light, but educational, and often cautionary tone.
Whether it's trying to make a smoke gun, encase an Ice Warrior in a block of ice, create a Loch Ness Monster, or simply come up with a way of presenting a photo collection on screen utilising only one studio camera, Bernard and Jack rose to the occasion
- often choking, soaking and terrifying their colleagues in the process. And almost all of these effects had to be done live the pressure was on!
Includes a foreword by visual effects designer Mat Irvine and an afterword by BAFTA-winning visual effects designer Mike Tucker

A bit of @hookland.bsky.social arrived his afternoon, in form of this first volume. As we’d hoped it has a selection of the small but perfectly formed “Goodnight from Hookland”. Although, such a concentration of the unseen has acted as a magnet to one of them. #TheGlimpsing #Hookland #Folklore

Oh, good thinking Prentice! Keeping cool and having suitable ice cream based snacks.

Finished @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social “Villager”, in the shadow of a large hill which seemed apt. It’s the first book we’ve finished and immediately started again, but in chronological order as I’m sure we’ve missed bits.

Being a sensible small panda, Toes has added a hat to his sun protection arsenal. Unfortunately it is the biggest pinks, so sizing might be an issue.

As panda’s already have a naturally occurring pale look and dark eye make up, Toes the Panda has decided to embrace #WorldGothDay with a suitable bow tie.

Prentice had a good explore of #Oxford today, crossing off a few of the well known sights.

Sometimes you just have to have a wander and get away from everything. Today’s mooching included some very fine Horse Chestnut tree candles and natures worst ambush predator, the #sausagedog. #Blooms

That’s the trouble with flying visits, having to see them off. Just checking to make sure the bear bag is properly stocked with snacks for the trip back.

The biggest pink has been fussing around with some rather good bookmarks from www.etsy.com/uk/shop/Book.... With some ink, strong tea and fine sandpaper to weather them, he’s using them as props for his #Ghostbusters books. Too much time on his hands if you ask me.

A collection of pop culture / horror film book marks on the covers of Spates Catalog of Nameless Horrors and Tobins Sprit Guide, from Ghostbusters . There’s a tog tag from Frankenstein’s monster, a library card for Jack Torranoe from the Shining, a card with the wording for an exorcism from The Exorcist and finally a post card from Derry, Maine with a subtle IT reference in the form of a red balloon.

The toe tag for Frankenstein’s monster, signed by Dr Frankenstein. It’s been weathered with tea and inks to make it look old.

A 1970’s style orange library card with sun bleaching on the top and bottom for Jack Torranance, from The Shining. It’s sat on an entry in Spates Catalog about the Overlook Hotel.

A faded and stained Greetings from Derry Maine postcard, with images from the town making up the word Derry. A red balloon can be seen in the image making up the D. It sits on the entry in Tobins Spirit Guide about IT, a Lino cut style image of a clown like figure illustrates the article.

Well, the biggest pink has applied a mist coat to two of the many raw plaster ceilings in the house, sorted the dodgy bathroom light pull and is about to fit a new loo seat. We might let him have a beer later, unless we sample this one first. #SmallBearsNeedBeer
