Nobody knows for sure how many people died during the seventy-two hours of extreme heat in the Pa-cific Northwest. The official count was 1,000, but heat is a subtle killer and doesn't always make it onto death cer-tificates. The actual number is likely far higher. Whatever the true toll was, it certainly included Rosemary Ander-son, sixty-seven, whose neighbor had texted her, "Good night, sleep tight, may you find lots of angel wings upon your pillow," the night before she was found dead in her house, where the indoor temperature measured 99.5 de-grees. It also included Jollene Brown, sixty-three, who lived alone in an apartment a few miles away from An-derson, who was found by her son Shane sitting in her La-Z-Boy rocker with one foot on the footrest, one foot on the floor, as if she'd been about to

stand up but couldn't because of the wall of heat in her tiny un-air-condi-tioned living room. As with most heat waves today, the people who died first were elderly folks who lived alone, or who were too poor to afford air-con-ditioning, or who had a medical prob-lem that left them vulnerable. In this sense, a heat wave is a predatory event, one that culls out the most vulner-able people. But that will change. As heat waves become more intense and more common, they will become more democratic.

It is possible - given absolute control over the media and the police - to rewrite the memories of hundreds of millions of people, if you have a generation to accomplish it in. Almost always, this is done to improve the hold that the powerful have on power, or to serve the narcissism or megalomania or paranoia of national leaders. It throws a monkey wrench into the error-correcting machinery. It works to erase public memory of profound political mistakes, and thus to guarantee their eventual repetition.

In our time, with total fabrication of realistic stills, motion pictures, and videotapes technologically within reach, with television in every home, and with critical thinking in decline, restructuring societal memories even without much attention from the secret police seems possible. What I'm imagining here is not that each of us has a budget of memories implanted in special therapeutic sessions by state-appointed psychiatrists, but rather that small numbers of people will have so much control over news stories, history books, and deeply affecting images as to work major changes in collective attitudes.

There is the devil’s bargain, in black and white. It’s nearly a hundred years now since Keynes wrote those lines. How are we doing at solving his ‘economic problem’? When we look around us, we can see that Keynes’s naive notion—that a society which cores itself around ‘avarice and usury’ can suddenly drop those vices when some undefined plateau of perfection is reached—is ludicrous. Once you adopt these values, they will make and remake you. The world they have built will depend upon their being pursued forever. Four decades after Keynes made his claim, another British economist, E. F. Schumacher, skewered his assumptions in his book Small Is Beautiful. Taking issue with ‘the dominant modern belief’ that the kind of ‘universal prosperity’ narrowly defined by the likes of Keynes would lead to peace or happiness, Schumacher argued instead that entirely the opposite was the case. ‘I suggest’, he wrote, ‘that the foundations of peace cannot be laid by universal prosperity, in the modern sense, because such prosperity, if attainable at all, is attainable only by cultivating such drives of human nature as greed

and envy, which destroy intelligence, happiness, serenity, and thereby the peacefulness of man.’4 This made the question of ‘prosperity’ a much bigger issue than the likes of Keynes had suggested. ‘What is at stake’, asserts Schumacher, ‘is not economics but culture; not the standard of living but the quality of life. Economics and the standard of living can just as well be looked after by a capitalist system, moderated by a bit of planning and redistributive taxation. But culture and, generally, the quality of life, can now only be debased by such a system.’ This is a big claim. It is also, to my mind, obviously correct. Schumacher knew it, and Keynes knew it too: it’s why he so apologetically explained that we would need to live under a self-made spell for a hundred years, like some fairytale princess. We must pretend to ourselves and to everyone that fair is foul and foul is fair. What he didn’t foresee was that we would forget that we were pretending. Today we are led by want, we are drenched in it, and we are increasingly sick from its infection.

That is a harder emotional position than defensiveness. It requires disaggregating two things that Boomer identity has long held together: the real effort and the real tailwind. It requires acknowledging that you can deserve what you earned and still have been given conditions that made earning easier - conditions that were then, through the very political power that prosperity enabled, systematically withdrawn from the people who came after.

On the plus side: There probably won't be any humans left in 200 years time. Even if there were, they'd probably not be able to read or write. Any documentation is going to be rotten, burnt, washed away or destroyed long before then anyhow.
