For 30 years, the USDA has kept raccoon rabies out of the central US by airdropping ravioli from helicopters. Each one is a fishmeal-coated packet with an oral rabies vaccine inside. Raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and skunks sniff them out, bite down, and vaccinate themselves.

This program doesn't just target raccoon rabies. It's already permanently eliminated two entire rabies variants: dog-coyote rabies in 2008 and gray fox rabies in 2013.

One of the great public health wins almost nobody's heard of, won with flying snacks.
